On a similar note, I hate "y'know?" Fuck yes, I know I want to whack you sideways with a teppanyaki plate.

I literally explode everytime I hear someone mis-use the word "literally".

I've come to hate the phrase "per se" as the top management types here at work tend to use it EVERY. DAMN. SECOND.

Never been a big fan of using Latin words in modern non-scientific usage. Judges really like to throw words like that around just so that you have to look at Black's to figure out what the hell they are getting at.

Well, now sometimes the latin is kind of an abbreviation that is useful. Instead of saying "the defendant has no prior criminal record involving crimes of dishonesty", it's quicker to say "no crimen falsi" and so on.

Also, I hate people who add "as" to every sentence to explain themselves.
"I thought it should be painted green, as I'm well-educated on..."
"That pizza was so satisfying, as I haven't eaten all day."

"That pizza was so satisfying, as I haven't eaten all day." Tis a good day to be an immigrant, as we take immense joy in constructing grammatically correct and concise sentences that elicit irrational grief among more skilled users of the English language. I had to say that, as I am an asshole.

"to be honest" is a hard one because i occasionally use it, but hate it when anyone else says it. "im not being funny" and "i dont mean to be nasty" are also phrases that are almost always followed with bitching and pure vileness.

Re: Words and phrases you don't like
Oh, I have a friend who says "legitly" every other word.
OK. Either say THE ENTIRE WORD (that would be "legitimately") or just freaking say "legit" if you're going to do that. "Legitly" is asinine.

Re: Words and phrases you don't like
Another BIG pet peeve is a distinctly American thing, namely the needless extension of words that already mean the exact thing you're trying to say. For example:
Burgle: def. to break into. Burglarize: def. See burgle.
"Oh my god, I've been burglarized!"
No, you've been burgled.
Another example of this, and one that's sadly become common place, is "comedic". A word that means exactly the same thing as "comic".

Eep. I promise I wasn't intentionally burglarizing your comment, I was just trying to be comedical. I literally feel like shit right now...

A new one is "it is what it is." Athletes like to say this. It really pisses me off because it says absolutely nothing that a reasonably intelligent person would not already know.
Reporter: How do you feel about the loss? Coach: It is what it is.

It's disappointing that your joke failed when it was so easily achievable. It should have been: "Its [sic] disapointing [sic] how many people use that." Its: a possessive pronoun. It's: a contraction of the words "it" and "is"
