BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

The Award for Supporting Actor has often been one of the more interesting categories because here we delve into some of the more interesting characters, so it should come to no surprise that this award often goes to the performers of antagonists and character actors. But it also finds itself in the hands of old-timers getting one last shot. And this year is no different than the rest as it explores all three tropes of this category.

First up is a performance from that in the latter theme As Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook. This legend has yet to win an award in 30s years, but remains a favorite on this board. His performance that explores the comedic and dramatic side of a mental disorder has been argubly his best performance since Jackie Brown.



Speaking of Tarantino, that cat seems to have his blood-soaked mittens all over this category, not only this year, but throughout his career as he is a master of writing characters for character actors, but what akes Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie in Django Unchained so interesting is that Leo is not a character actor. But maybe he should re-consider his career as the former child actor nails this performance capture the pseudo sophisitication of Louis XIV and the twisted menace of the antebellum South all in one character that may be a mirror for America as a whole.



In one of the most underrated performances of the year it would seem from the disturbing film The Master is Phillip Seymour Hoffman's creepy yet charasmatic role that captures the shallow intellect of a cult following.



Next for Tarantino is Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen in a wickedly funny role, his best since, well, maybe Jackie Brown in this hilarious performance that captures the sick humor of ole black face and Sam boys of old.



Then there was Tommy Lee Jones, an old vet to the category as the scene stealing Theudus Stevens.



Last, in an opposite fashion as Mr. Stevens is an abolitionist who uses violence and actions over words and intellect to get the job done. Although Chritoph Waltz certainly has a way with words and intellect as well. In fact he might very well be the master of language itself in Django Unchained. This time around he plays the good guy, and perhaps more than any other Tarantino film he gives the film heart, a rare sight for the director of blood and guts.
