Re: 11th Annual WOKJ Motion Picture Awards WINNERS LIVE CERE
Best visual effects The influential F/X of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, including the blend of motion-capture performance and digital rendering employed to give life to troubled simian protagonist Caesar, are pushed even farther in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Set a decade later, it finds the intelligent apes forging their own world in the forest, hunting and interacting with the elements, as well as going to war in a destroyed San Francisco. Edge of Tomorrow's F/X team sends Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise, and hundreds of others to war with a tentacled alien race. The film's elaborate centerpiece, repeated several times from a variety of vantage points, is a futuristic answer to the Normandy landings of the Second World War and includes flying spacecraft (many of which crash and burn) and imposing mechanical suits utilized by the human combatants. Sixty years after his screen debut, Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, receives a digital facelift in this gunmetal-realistic adaptation, which, of course, pits him against other grotesque creatures, including a mutated winged beast. Another F/X highlight is a Hail-Mary parachute drop into a city on fire. (The city? Again, San Francisco.) Marvel's strangest, most hilarious, and most dangerous group of heroes leaps into action in Guardians of the Galaxy, and two of them are complete digital creations: gun-toting raccoon bounty hunter Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and his devoted companion, living tree of few words Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). The adoring public response to both characters is a major testament to the achievement of the film's F/X artisans and technicians, who are also partly responsible for the film's extensive, space-opera-style world building. Interstellar's F/X team fashions an atmospheric, elegant, and fact-based journey into deep space and even to a place where time is represented as an alterable physical element. Their concepts and the resulting images earned the ambitious Christopher Nolan film comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Gravity. And the award for best visual effects goes to:

I voted for Captain America as well, BTW. It's a shame that it got zero nominations...

I think when all is said and done we're going to be wondering how Nolan didn't get a nomination.
