Post Gonzales Looks Okay
So Alberto Gonzales is going through questioning right now, but he seems okay from what I'm reading. I remember there were some issues about his advocating of abuse when his name was first suggested, and that yesterday there were some articles about his quick rise to power in Texas. The second suggestion is a bit easier to tackle. I'm sure the Bush family and others helped him rise a bit, but anyways, no one makes it to such high positions within the state without a little patronage so to speak, so I'm not particularly outraged. As to the former accusations, here's some info the Globe had today:

AG pick defends his advice to Bush

WASHINGTON -- Alberto Gonzales, under intense questioning yesterday about Bush administration interrogation policies he helped shape as White House counsel, said he would never condone torture and that he was "sickened" by photos of soldiers abusing detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq...

..."I am and will remain deeply committed to ensuring that the United States government complies with all of its legal obligations as it fights the war on terror," Gonzales testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Those obligations include, of course, the Geneva Conventions whenever they apply. . . . Contrary to reports, I consider the Geneva Conventions neither quaint nor obsolete."...

...Despite their tough questions, no Democratic senator said he planned to vote against Gonzales. Senate Judiciary chairman Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said a confirmation vote will come soon, perhaps before Bush's Jan. 20 inauguration.

Yesterday was Specter's first hearing as chairman, a position the GOP moderate took despite a bid late last year by social conservatives to block him from the post. Most senators began their remarks by congratulating Specter before turning to Gonzales.

Specter joined Democrats in pressing Gonzales to promise to inform the committee about Justice Department activities and to testify at hearings more often than Attorney General John Ashcroft, who was often criticized on Capitol Hill for resisting oversight. Gonzales said he respected the committee's oversight role.

Senator Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, reminded Gonzales that the attorney general represents the interests of the American people, not just the president. "There is some concern that if the president wants a thing, you're going to go ahead and make it work," Leahy said.

Gonzales said he understood the difference...

Hmmmm. Not too bad. I guess I'm asking for people that have info from different news sources other than the main papers, or have a different sentiment. I'm still not sure how I feel about him, but mostly because of my distrust for the administration as a whole. He seemed to hold up fairly well under questioning though.

The part where they demanded in a stern tone that he introduce his family was surreal. Never seen anything like that at a confirmation hearing.

Seems like a good enough guy to me. I don't know a lot about him.

You watched it live on CNN? Why did they ask to meet his family? They didn't want another nanny-esque incident? I don't understand?

What did you think of what you heard live Archie?

I thought the senators, including the republicans, sounded condescending to him. Now on the one hand, he's just a flunkie, yes he was for terror because Bush wanted it, and now he's against it because that's what Bush wants now, but still a little more dignity was in order.

I saw some on c-span (unintential, was flipping around), some on cnn, and a bit on the daily show which I don't watch as much anymore but have the past couple days.

His family was seated behind him, no idea why they were even brought there, who cares who he is married to or what his kids look like. And the Senator was "please introduce us to your lovely familly" and Gonzales responded with something like "Mr chairman, I'm proud to be here and -" and got cut off with the Senator demanding sternly that he introduce his lovely family. It was rather like a parent telling a kid, you're going to do this and you're going to enjoy it dammit!
