P.S. How many of you Christians celebrate Halloween?

I thought so

I don't celebrate Halloween in any way.

 I always mention that I don't mean to generalize when I talk about certain groups, there are always exceptions. Many of them...sometimes a majority.

But still I bet most of the people who are in this thread saying atheists shouldn't celebrate Christmas are jumping for joyyyy when Halloweed comes around. ...And I won't get into the history of halloween and it's original purposes

I've always thought it was really strange that Christians celebrated Halloween considering it's origins...oh, well. It's really none of my business.

Athiests denounce religion.

See this is a fundamental misunderstanding.

Athiests do not believe in a god, a higher power or multiple gods. They do not however denounce other religious docterines any more than a Christian would denounce Muslims.

Get this fundamentally clear, Atheists are still people with traditions and celebrations, they just do NOT believe that there is a god.

While that is true, a non belief in the existance of God automatically negates belief in something like a religion and practices specifically related to it. Yes, they do not denounce other religions any more than a Christian would denounce Muslims. I completely agree with that. But there is a slight subtlety(did I spell that correct?) here. Most Muslims themselves believe a lot of what Christianity is about.

Quote:
I think thats the major issue here. Thats where the difference between something like thanksgiving and christmas comes in. While thanksgiving is not something denounced, just not part of a culture, Christmas in this scenario is a Christian events. Athiests deny the existance of God, meaning deny religion itself and hence, its events as well.

This brings up the whole "origion of Christmas" debate... whether or not Jesus was born in something approximating February and that the Catholic leagues, in effort to co-opt Paganistic rituals, tacked on the additional part about Jesus' birth.

And as I already stated. The initial comments were stated under the assumption that Christmas was a christian thing ... : )

This is a pretty funny thread, and was an enjoyable read. Unfortunately, I learned a few things too, and I don't come here to learn, so that was kind of a downer. Oh, and it was long. I feel it my duty to do a summary for those who came in late, like me.

Mr. X: Atheists should not celebrate Christmas.

Makeshift_wings: That's stupid. Why should you care?

Mr. X.: You've insulted me. But, ok, you can now celebrate Christmas, just don't use the name.

Shad: Christmas is actually a pagan holiday that Christians adopted. Since it's pagan origin, shouldn't Christians be the ones to not celebrate it as a matter of principal? Oh, and Mozart licks ass.

Mr. X: I have no answer for the pagan thing. Please debate this without bringing up good points that hurt my feelings.

Mike Ventrella: Atheists love puppies too.

Beeblebrox: Hi. I'm Megamoze.

bABA: Just want everyone to know I like girls in case you were thinking I was gay.

Mr. X: I really expected a warm reception to this topic. Your taking it the wrong way.

There. That should save a few of you from having to read the entire thing over again.

Tony, you're taking it the wrong way. You offended me! WHY DON'T YOU CARE?! I HATE YOU! But I love your opinion. Heck, I love you Tony. Have my babies.

:)

Unfortuantely though, that is a completely unfair assumption to make. The fact is the holiday is older then Christianity, you cannot just dsicount facts like that for the sake of argument, because you are basically telling your debate opponent, sorry but I am just going to make some assumptions so that you have nothing to debate.

Thats not the point I was making to begin with. Going back to the beginning of the thread, the argument was pretty much based upon WITH THE assumption that christmas was a christian tradition. The fact is, many see it as such today as well. hence the comparison between the 2 holidays IS like comparing apples to oranges.

But I cliam its unfair to make that assumptions, many Christians make that assumption becuase they ahve no knwlodege of the pagan holiday that exisated before theres.

Just because poeple see it as a Christian holiday doesn;t make it that way. People can see things anyway they want, but their is factual evidence to back up the fact the hoiday has non Christian orgins as wella s evidence suggesting Jesus wasn't born in December...if Christians want to debate whether non Christians get to celebrate Christmas they are not allowed to skirt around those issues.

I'm very afraid of what kind of offspring we would produce. It's this type of mixing up the gene pool that creates mutant babies like bABA, Rusty, Ripper, Snrub, Krem, and loyalfromlondon. I think it's best if I stick with my current plan to mate with Jennifer Garner. I think it'll be best for everyone that way, and we would make babies that are halfway good looking.

But, I still love you, I just have societies best interests in mind.

Oh, YOU get Jennifer Garner?! What do I get? Bill Murray?! I only had that dream once, Tony, and I won't live that one out.
