It demands all basic English grammar skills combined with skills of analysing texts for rhetorical devices and summarizing texts. That's closer to the Reading/Comprehension portion of the ACT. English is about the mechanics and structure, Reading is about understanding and analysis.
Your test is still far more than any test I'll have to endure. _________________

From the first line till "...before they've had a chance to manifest themselves". We got that excerpt to analyse. Artur, TOEFL is a substitute for the reading/writing sections on SAT/ACT. If you apply to American schools as a forweigner, they'll ask you for the TOEFL results as well as the math section on SAT/ACT.

I didn't get to use TOEFL as a substitute for SAT Verbal when I applied college. ](*,) And it took a miracle for me to get a 670 on Verbal.

I don't think you need to take any part of SAT since you're applying directly from Germany. You can take the SAT's (and I'm pretty sure ACT's too) in almost any country of the world. Just go to collegeboard.com (for SAT's) and look for the test centers in your country.

Artur, also, your best bet is to check the requirements from the school you're trying to apply to. Different schools want different things, what I mentioned can only be used as a general guideline.

I certainly will do that. That Math thing is a bit unsettling, though (I hate Math). All I know is that TOEFL is a general requirement everywhere (it starts becoming a requirement at some German universities even).

The Math part of the ACT has, according to the irrelevent prep book ym mom bought me:
14 questions on arithmetic
10 questions on elementary algebra
9 questions on intermediate algebra
9 questions on coordinate geomtery
14 questions on plane geometry
4 questions on trigonometry
That's 60 questions, and the test allots you an hour to do it all.

The Math Exam I have taken some days ago was okay. It appears as if most in my class struggled with it, but I was just fine actually. There is even a slight chance for me to get an A there. One half of it was about functions/derivations, well analysis all in all and the other half was Probability calculations. Seriously, it's a joke It's the kind of Math I had about 4-5 years ago. I told you it was easy. My wife graduated high school and college in the US without ever taking math tougher than simple algebra. In her defense she has a degree in business.

Man, standardized tests suck. It's not so much the principles behind them as it is their execution and people's interpretation of the results.
I always used to kick ass on them, though..
But really, what does that prove? Not a lot, methinks.
