I hope the rights to The Rum Diary have already been purchased. It's been in development hell for a while and it'd make a great movie...

The Rum Diary is amazing. As far as I know, the film is in pre-production.

It's too early for me to form any opinion on this, depends on if he was suffering from something or what not. It could have been a sad thing, or a selfish idiotic thing. I don't know enough to comment.

But luckily not knowing enough to comment doesn't stop me from posting!

Wow. With Johnny Depp again? Should be great...

If only they could get Gilliam attached to the project...

Fear in Loathing is hard to stomach. It's one of those books where you should first start with the movie, as the book's descriptions are just waaay too much.

Oh is it? Did you cry when you learned Hitler had shot himself? ;)

Obviously Thompson is not a Hitler, I'm just making the point that it's not as cut and dried as you say it is. Motives matter, and who it is matters. I'm inclined to feel sorry for Thompson but we'll have to see when we hear more details.

Hunter Thompson gave a lecture at my college once (I guess this would have been around 1980) and I asked him what he thought of Gary Trudeau, who based "Uncle Duke" in Doonesbury on Thompson. Thompson's reply was perfectly in character: "If I ever meat the bastard, I'll wring his fucking neck."

I wonder if Trudeau will have Uncle Duke die now.

Benicio del Toro is in as well!

Sad news, indeed. And Fear and Loathing is an amazing movie.

Somewhat off Topic, but Sandra Dee, recently portrayed by Kate Bosworth in Beyond the Sea, is dead as well.

I just felt that we should post all the celebrity deaths in one thread.

As for Thompson, I'll probably pay $3.50 to rent and watch Fear and Loathing as a way of paying respect.

It really is the ultimate choice of humanity, to be or not to be, he chose not to be. I respect his decision. I don't have to agree with it, but it is.

It's not so cut and dry as people would like to think it is.

No matter how he died, he was in my opinion the funniest writer of all time. In one of my friend's opinions, the all time greatest.

Hunter gets his wish: ashes to be shot out of canon.
