  • Balance calories between the amount you eat and the amount of energy you burn. For moderately active people between the ages of 31 and 50, recommended calories would be 2,000 per day for women and 2,400 to 2,600 for men.
  • Thirty minutes of exercise is the minimum. Exercise for 60 minutes to maintain weight and prevent weight gain. If you’ve already lost weight, exercise for 60 to 90 minutes daily.
  • Eat a variety of foods that are high in nutrients and low in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, added sugars and salt. Follow government recommendations such as the food guide pyramid.
  • Eat at least 4 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables a day if you have a 2,000-calorie diet. Eat more or less depending on the calorie level.
  • Eat fiber-rich whole fruits and vegetables and whole grains often. Eat and drink little added sugar or caloric sweeteners.
  • Keep trans fat as low as possible. Get no more than 10 percent of your calories from saturated fat and no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol daily.
  • Limit salt to about one level teaspoon a day.
  • If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation, about one drink per day for women and two for men.
  • Clean hands, food contact surfaces and fruits and vegetables. To avoid getting sick from food, separate raw, cooked and ready-to-eat foods while shopping, preparing or storing foods.

Four and a half cups of fruits and vegetables, every day? Do you know how much that will COST? Never mind the time and effort to haul the veggies home, wash them, and cut them up. You're going to use up most of your allowed salt just on the veggies. Add that with the exercise, and just staying healthy is going to be a full-time job.

dude, just eat the way you always do. You'll be fine. Throw mcdonalds into it, KFC, subway, home made salads, juices .,... whatever the hell ou want. Just make sure at the end of the day, you eat everything with moderation.

moderation is the key.

Too much. I remember some professor at Harvard re-did the food chart a few years ago and said we consumed way too much fruit and dairy. I could see a greater emphasis on veggies, but fruits are misleading. They're just sugar/water/vitamins a and c. You can get that from skittles. I've always found the breakdown in food to be useless. As far as I'm concerned the healthiest thing in the word is probably still a salad with olive oil and some bread and cheese...Oh yes, and a piece of chocolate.

I honestly think the makers of these guidelines really good give two hsits baout actually releasing information that would help the public.

I actually exercise about 60-120 minutes a day, which I can do because I am a student with no kids, do they really expect most people to 60-90 minutes a day? I mean really, someone is hitting the crack pipe hard.

ripper, the perfect diet will never ever be told by any dietition.

This is my conspiracy theory. If people knew 'real answers' to things, then products and services wouldn't be sold.

I still think that a cure to a lot of recurring deseases exist ... they'd never make it public cause there are more sales in making people consume medicine again and again.


now i'm just rambling.

I agree with you actually, I am not a big conspiracy perosn, but he government food/exercise recommendations are bullshit and far more responsible for the weight issues in the US then McDonalds.

That seems like an awful lot to do. I heard that you can still lose weight if you just monitor what you eat, and avoid too much sugar, and just excercise daily.

Well you could make a lot of yummy fruit smoothies in the blender, but I'm not so sure about the vegetables.
