Post Savoy re-launches with cover of Barack & Michelle Obama
Savoy Magazine Gears Up For its Long-Awaited Relaunch

Quote:
Savoy is back.

More than a year has passed since Savoy magazine shut down after Vanguarde Media filed for bankruptcy in late 2003. But the glossy, black-owned publication has new backing, new editorial leadership, and is expected to relaunch in February.

“What distinguishes Savoy is that we are targeting affluent, upscale, professional African American readers,” Hermene Hartman, Savoy’s owner and publisher, told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “We’ll publish trendy, savvy and topical stories with our point of view.”

Hartman said the return of Savoy will feature 116 pages of articles, features and a cover story on popular Illinois Senator Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle. The debut issue will also feature a story about hip-hop and a photo essay entitled “Portraits of Power.”

”We’ll have wonderful stories,” said Hartman, who will publish Savoy from Chicago.

Five columnists, Hartman said, will be a new addition to Savoy’s editorial offerings, providing financial advice, inspiration and social commentary. The columnists include economist Julianne Malveaux, and author/motivational speaker Terrie Williams.

Here's a pic of the cover, I saw it in the train station today. i can't find a better image, but its a pretty good spread, and was apparently executed by photographer Victor Skrebneski.

Interesting new launch and even more indicative of Obama's reach. Its going to be interesting to see if this is a case of too much too early, or if he can sustain positive media and support for at least another 6 to 8 years.

I'm sorry, I've never heard of Savoy. As far as I know, all these new one-word magazines are just the same 3 magazines that they change the name of every six months, just to make us think it's a new magazine. There's a whole slew of them at Borders.

I'm not sure I like Savoy covering hip-hop. Isn't it rather hypocritical that Obama is being paid $158,000 a year working his butt off for the People of Illinois, when these multimillionaire hip-hop and rap stars are more concerned about their own bootie and bling?

I feel rather sorry for Obama, being on all these covers. The black community, or the Democrats, or whoever, probably expect him the change the world, while in reality he's #99 in Senate priority. The old guard is probably hazing him in committee. I guess it's worth it if his success gets other people into politics. In 25 years the Senate could be full of Obamas.

Obama is a perfect example of what is right with America. Now imagine if we had more people like that around the world...

@Erendis, Savoy is Chicago based publication and was pretty big there until it closed, so its not a 'zine. It was pretty established as a "Black" magazine that was sort of business-week-ish or what-have-you rather than Ebony or Entertainment mag, etc. The rappers that get covered in it are more from a business stand-point then interviews about who they are dating, so it is better in that way. This cover-shoot was for the "power" issue, so I see what you mean about Obama being 99th in the Senate right now as a first-term senator. People may be expecting too much too fast and be dissappointed that he hasn't overhauled the entire place in 6 years. Still he's a smart guy (clearly) and I think he'll sustain interest as long as he keeps to lesser known (but still major/respectable) interviews and media coverage. He and Michelle probably did this one to assist in the re-maunch, especially since it's Chicago based and his home-base support is still Illinois (of course).

@Boxie, Yes, that's why i thought to drop a bit of an update on him. People forget after the general election that anyone else exists. Still important to pay attention to people you respect and support.
