Maybe Federer can be off his game for once?

Or how about Agassi is on his game, and Federer is just OK tomorrow. Making for another 5-set victory for agassi!

You mean like he was today. If he played the way he did today in the Finals, I'd give Agassi a good shot of winning at least a set.
If Agassi is on his game, and Federer is just good - then I would say it goes 5, but the winner... that's harder to determine.

That's a different kind of celebration from Federer, I guess he got tired of his whole drop to his knees and roll on his back after a win. Good to see him switch it up.

OK, its the start of the season today, so i thought i would resurrect the tennis thread.

Things look exciting early in the women's game with the return of Hingis, can she return to the top or has the game moved on too much in her absence? Sharapova is injured early on as well as doubts about Henin-Hardenne's fitness. Can Serena Williams hit form to retain her Australian Open crown?

The men's is less interesting to me, its down to the usual suspects. My only interest will be in following the rise of Scot Andy Murray, who finished last year ranked 64, remember his name, you'll be hearing a lot of it this year! Can Safin defend his Aus open crown? Federer favorite? or will Nalbandian or Hewitt surprise?

Any predictions anyone?

Will Safin even be able to play Australian Open? Either way, I can't see him perform at last year's level for two straight weeks again. That match against Federer last year was surreal. Federer will win and take the talk of a "Federer Slam" into French.

She certainly is:

Martina Hingis made a successful return to professional tennis with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Maria Vento-Kabchi at the Australian Hardcourt Championships.

It'll be interesting to watch her progress leading up to the aus open. Henman also starts the year with a good win against 3rd seed and world number 16 Gasquet.

Men's Round of 16

Roger Federer SUI (1) vs. Tommy Haas GER
Dominik Hrbaty SVK (12) vs. Nikolay Davydenko RUS (5)
Juan Ignacio Chela ARG vs. Nicolas Kiefer GER (21)
Paul-Henri Mathieu FRA vs. Sebastien Grosjean FRA (25)

Fabrice Santoro FRA vs. David Ferrer ESP (11)
Tommy Robredo ESP (16) vs. David Nalbandian ARG (4)
Ivan Ljubicic CRO (7) vs. Thomas Johansson SWE (10)
Marcos Baghdatis CYP vs. Andy Roddick USA (2)

If Federer beats Haas, then he rolls into the final where he most likely wins. I think this is his Championship match. Haas beat him earlier this year in an exhibition so it's going to be a stern test, but Federer has been playing silly well, so it's going to take a great effort from Haas.

Roddick, has a tough draw to hold to his seed and make it to the final. Marcos isn't a push over and Ljubicic has always given him trouble. That coupled with a possible Nalbandian semi makes getting to Sunday not an easy feat, but with the way he's been serving it's hard to bet against him.

Women's Round of 16

Lindsay Davenport USA (1) vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (14)
Virginia Ruano Pascual ESP vs. Justine Henin-Hardenne BEL (8)
Maria Sharapova RUS (4) vs. Daniela Hantuchova SVK (17)
Elena Vesnina RUS vs. Nadia Petrova RUS (6)

Patty Schnyder SUI (7) vs. Anastasia Myskina RUS (12)
Nicole Vaidisova CZE (16) vs. Amelie Mauresmo FRA (3)
Martina Hingis SUI vs. Samantha Stosur AUS
Francesca Schiavone ITA (15) vs. Kim Clijsters BEL (2)

Even with the ouster of the Williams' sisters the top half is still brutal. JHH and Sharapova would have them in this round but now get a doubles specialist and someone whose mental state is as a fragile as a house of cards.

They haven't shown much of Kuznetsova, and if she's healthy she could give Lindsay a lot of problems, but I'm not sure how her back is. Lindsay has been striking the ball really well, but looked beatable that second set of her match with Kirilenko.

JHH would have been facing Venus if seeds held, which would have presented her with a lot more trouble than Pascual, I still think Venus has some sort of mental hold over her. JHH has been in form this tournament and with a tournament win already under her belt in 06, look for her to cruise into the quarters.

Sharapova should beat Hantuchova, I don't see Sharapova giving up as many free points as Williams did and if both are playing near their best I don't see how Daniella troubles Maria. Sharapova should face Petrova in the quarters and will have no trouble with the clay court liking Petrova when they meet.

The weaker bottom half just doesn't present as many interesting matches. Schnyder/Myskina? They still around? Schnyder can spin the ball, and Myskina well she can hit it well occasionally. This is easily the weakest quarter in the draw. The winner of that faces the winner of Mauresmo/Vadisova, and it should be Mauresmo, but one never can tell with her. Vadisova is a quality up and comer who could give her trouble.

Hingis has been playing well this tournament, but the only test she's had has been her first round opponent seeded 30, who's even more emotionally volatile than Myskina or Hantuchova. She hasn't faced anyone with power this tournamnet and Stosur has some of that. If she does make it to the quarters, she's likely to face Clijsters, who even while injured has managed to stroll through her cakewalk portion of a draw. If her hip is acting up, I could see Hingis giving her trouble, but I don't think it will be enough.

Hingis is in as good a draw as she can have, with a banged-up Kim Clijsters and never-won-the-big-one-except-for-last-year-end-championship Mauresmo.
