Quote:
Army of the Dead is a 2021 American zombie heist film directed by Zack Snyder, with a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Joby Harold, based on a story by Snyder. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, and Garret Dillahunt, and follows a group of soldiers who plan a Las Vegas casino heist amid a zombie apocalypse.

The film was announced in 2007, but spent several years in development hell at Warner Bros. before having the rights bought by Netflix in 2019. Snyder was announced as director, and the cast joined over the next several months. Filming began in July 2019, taking place in Los Angeles, New Mexico, and New Jersey, including at the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel. Chris D'Elia was originally cast in the film, but after several sexual misconduct accusations were made against him in August 2020, Tig Notaro was hired to replace his character and reshot his scenes using green screen and body doubles.

Army of the Dead was released in select theaters in the United States on May 14, 2021, and will stream digitally on Netflix on May 21. The film received praise from critics for "the action, humor, and diversity of the cast" but the runtime and "attempts at more emotional content" were criticized

You undead son of a bitch, I’m in.

This wasn’t the fun back-to-basics zombie romp that I was hoping for, Snyder is definitely still in the morose epic camp he has stayed in since 2009. It’s still very entertaining though. The characters skirt the line of sympathetic and suitable zombie bait, useful for most situations (the hacker and tough black guy are the best pairing.) The smart zombies were an interesting turn, making me think ZS would have rather adapted The Passage. That story ended up being very emo like the rest of the movie, but again still entertaining. You could find worse ways to spend 2 and a half hours.

B+ish, maybe down to B for all the obnoxious stuff that could have been cut.

“He thought it would be pretty cool and kinda patriotic if you think about it.”

That made me LOL hard. It sucks the movie stops being funny after the elevator surprise, but I guess Dawn ended on a bummer note too. All of his movies do now that I think about it.

I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it nearly as much as I thought I would. I love Synder's DOTD remake, but this just wasn't on that same level of awesomness IMO. It also didn't need to be 2 and a half hours long either, but atleast I was never bored.

The gore is fantastic though, especially the BIG zombie Tiger kill and Bautista has never been more badass and dynamic of an actor when it comes to the emotional scenes as he is here, but I really didn't like the daughter character and alot of the supporting characters felt wasted to me or not all that well developed.

I wasn't a big fan of the ending either or how this movie started which is probably one of the most contrived, random explanations I have ever seen to the start of a zombie outbreak.

I mean a dude just so happens to be getting a blowjob at the same time the military is transporting a crate with a super zombie in it lol. Only Snyder can come up with some crazy crap like that, but it did get a good laugh out of me if I'm being honest.

I saw this in the theater and am glad I went. I thought it was pretty fun. Was disappointed they killed the best character though. Also not a huge fan of how it ends. But regardless I enjoyed it.

B/B+

This was surprisingly underwhelming. Not bad at all but nothing I'd want to revisit. Previous instances have shown cutting Snyder's films is a mistake but did this warrant a 2 and a half hour runtime? Eh.

Good potential of a story but story focuses on heist than actual world building which to me brings it down. There are too many interesting side characters, ideas and other things in the movie going on that the main story comes out weakest of the lot. Bautista is great but I felt Matthias Schweighöfer stole every scene he is in because that character was the only one that felt focused on his motives while rest were just going through the regular zombie-movie chores. The movie is funny but only when it wants to be and that is mostly at the start of the movie but then Snyder forgets to maintain the balance. Its also too long with too little zombie action or tension till the finale. Luckily Bautista is on his A-game and carries the movie well to be tolerable.

Snyder's was part of the trio of Zombie films to reinvigorate and popularize (The others being 28 Days Later and Shaun of the dead) this is surprisingly generic and not too inventive on the gore or thematic level. Snyder can't help but even knock of other films from the Opening Credits of Zombieland to the bizarre semi intelligent alpha with pets searching for his mate (I am Legend) And Tig Notaro is awkwardly CGI'd into a lot of scenes (As she was added to replace the disgraced Chris D'Elia) The girl side characters were the most interesting, and the plot really goes no where except to end a rather long film to kill everyone in about 10 minutes. I'm not saying the runtime was an issue, but there is no way I could ever watch this again in one setting.

The Walking Dead's standard is safely untouched. But it is a fun throwback for most of the time. The setting and my love of the genre gives this a slight pass.
