The Boys in the Band
Quote: The Boys in the Band is a 2020 American gay drama film directed by Joe Mantello, based on the 1968 play of the same name by Mart Crowley, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Ned Martel. Crowley had previously adapted The Boys in the Band for a 1970 film version directed by William Friedkin[1] and starring the original 1968 Off-Broadway cast.[2] The film stars the full cast from the play's 2018 Broadway revival, including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins.
The film was released on September 30, 2020, by Netflix, and received generally positive reviews from critics.

Re: The Boys in the Band
The entire cast is in their element and Jim Parsons is mesmerizing in here. The movie starts off really well setting up the dynamics of the group and the introduction of the stranger brings chaos. But once that dies down and Zachary Quinto comes in it becomes dull for the middle half. It gets really interesting once they start the phone game as we get deeper into the psyche/traumas of these characters. It would have been better so these flashbacks played out in the middle half so that the movie doesn't feel too much like the play. The finale is great again thanks to Parsons' turn which brings in the much needed emotional resonance.

The performances were excellent though as usual with anything adapted from a play it felt quite stagey. Worth watching though. B

Re: The Boys in the Band
This made me realize I've never liked Jim Parsons in anything. Seeing Hollywood recently where he plays another awful character doesn't help. But this is him at his most grating. I HATED this. Half the characters are insufferable and the whole thing was fucking tedious. It was briefly interesting during the phone call scenes but those also had Parsons obnoxiously chewing the scenery.
Honestly one of 2020's worst. I don't think I sat through anything else that was this painful to watch.
