Greyhound is a 2020 American war film directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester, and also stars Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue. The plot follows a US Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment in command of a multi-national escort group defending a merchant ship convoy under attack by submarines in early-1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic, only months after the U.S. officially entered World War II.

Greyhound was initially scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 12, 2020, by Sony Pictures, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The distribution rights were then sold to Apple TV+, which released the film digitally on July 10, 2020. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who highlighted the effective use of the 90-minute runtime.

It's no Saving Private Ryan or The Hunt for Red October, but its still a pretty solid war film. Tom Hanks carries it well, but you really know nothing about his character or any of the characters in this movie which definitely kind of hurt it IMO, because just like The Outpost I never got all that emotionally invested in the characters themselves. However, its almost non stop action from beginning to end and those battle sequences are actually very well done. It should have been longer though and more fleshing out of the characters would have gone a long ways to make it more memorable.

Also, I don't understand why Elizabeth Shue was in this when she barely had any lines of dialogue. Her scenes could have been cut completely and it would not have made an ounce of a difference.

Tom Hanks delivers a sharp screenplay when it comes to action but he doesn't work well with the emotional aspect of the story or maybe those parts were edited. I liked Schneider's direction at times but he fails to build capture the dread of being hunted with not many resources at hand mostly because his focus is on Hanks. The movie definitely needed to be longer than it is, to pause and breathe between scenes. The final scene inspires little to no emotion.

Agreed with Dil on Shue's involvement, either let her be there or just completely cut off all her scenes.

The first thirty minutes are pretty good, but then its just more of the same for the next hour and I got really bored. Greyhound thinks it can be Dunkirk, but no one can be Dunkirk.

This was so boring. Not my cup of tea at all. Needed a more relatable human element.
