Now, I understand that the classic Warner Brothers cartoons are out of fashion nowadays, so I'm not surprised at the initial hostile reaction in reviews and box office. Nut Job 2 is very much written in their dark sarcastic and slightly absurd tone. It is also assuredly a non-musical (complete with a non-song).
If you enjoy the smart-aleck humor of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, then you may well enjoy their modern day animal cousins Surly et al. in Nut Job 2. For those those who like their dialogue sharp and cynical, their villains irredeemable, and don't mind more than a few sly hidden jokes for adults, Nut Job 2 is a hilarious treat. There's even an Annabelle gag (taunting NJ2's weekend co-launcher). *A+*
(Don't miss the short after credits scene - very dark, naturally.)
