The Color Purple
The Color PurpleQuote: The Color Purple is a 1985 American period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielberg's eighth film as a director (not including the 1971 television film Duel), and was a change from the summer blockbusters for which he had become famous. Filmed in Anson and Union counties in North Carolina, the film tells the story of a young African American girl named Celie and shows the problems African American women faced during the early 1900s, including poverty, racism, and sexism. Celie is transformed as she finds her self-worth through the help of two strong female companions.

One of the best films of the 80's. Whoppi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey were totally robbed of their Oscars, as was Steven Spielberg. This movie is funny, touching, moving, and very uplifting. We get to witness first hand Celie's struggle with her abusive and very mean husband Albert. All of the performers are so brilliant here. Whoppi Goldberg is incredible in her debut performance. This movie is one of the best ever made. This movie should of won every Oscar it was nominated for in my opinion. Everything is amazing here. The story, cinematography, music, and actors. The scene with Shug going to her father's church with a group of singers still remaines one of the most touching scenes in cinematic history for it. The whole scene is executed well, and it couldn't of been better. I would tell anybody to see this film, and try to take it all in, and see if you feel something, because if you don't, you have no pulse.

Remember when Whoopi Goldberg was a good actress? If you don't, then you should watch this. The whole cast (with the exception of Rae Dawn Chong) is terrific. The ending is one of the biggest tear jerkers in movie history. And yes, it really was robbed at the Oscar because it didn't win a single award.
I did think the scene with Shug singing in the church reuniting with her minister father was a good scene, but it's one of those scenes you only see in a movie. It didn't feel genuine. My grade: A-.
