Re: Backtrack (2015)
In this Australian horror film, a psychiatrist (Adrien Brody) still grieving the death of his daughter discovers several of his patients are ghosts. He travels to his hometown to investigate whether their haunting of him is connected to a tragic episode from his youth. Sam Neill co-stars as the protagonist's mentor and confidant. This is a solidly eerie tale of the supernatural. Its influences are not hard to spot—the frequent imagery related to the daughter's death on a rainy street is similar to Don't Look Now, and the film almost plays as an answer to the question, "What if The Sixth Sense's twist came at the beginning?"—but they are not distracting. Brody proves an engaging lead with his convincing portrayal of regret and internal torment, and the film's brand of creepy is nicely autumnal, restrained, and tasteful, though there are still a few big, brazen, goofy jolts along the way, too. The resolution to the central mystery is a tad contrived and predictable (one character all but screams, "I have a deadly secret" from the moment he or she is introduced), but at least it is not offensive to the viewer's intelligence.

Backtrack
Quite a pedestrian psychological mystery. A few jump scares, a slow pace, and a generic unraveling of events. I liked the story of this cleverly-titled thriller; a man's boyhood mistake leads him to unearth that his father was a paedophile/child molester, but nothing seemed to logically lead to each discovery. It was the ghosts that just happened to point towards clues, which is lazy screenwriting. I was surprised to see Bruce Spence in the film (as one of the dead train passengers). Brody gives a decent performance.

B I agree. Found it even slightly better. Pleasant surprise. Saw it at last year's FFF.

Re: Backtrack (2015)
The movie starts of really well but once the mystery starts to unfold it goes into non-sensical territory. The visions part and Brody/Neil combo in the first half is interesting specially thanks to the settings that bring out the dread of this character. The whole ghosts are pointing out the murderer and his friend's part here were completely mishandled which brought this down. The very end was also disappointing and cliched. Brody is really good in this.
