The Man Who Knew Infinity
The Man Who Knew InfinityQuote: The Man Who Knew Infinity is a 2015 Indian biographical drama film based on the 1991 book of the same name by Robert Kanigel. The film stars Dev Patel as the real-life Srinivasa Ramanujan, a mathematician who after growing up poor in Madras, India, earns admittance to Cambridge University during World War I, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G. H. Hardy (played by Jeremy Irons).
Filming began in August 2014 at Trinity College, Cambridge. The film had its world premiere as a gala presentation at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and was selected as the opening gala of the 2015 Zurich Film Festival. It also played other film festivals including Singapore International Film Festival and Dubai International Film Festival.
Distinguished mathematicians Manjul Bhargava and Ken Ono are Associate Producers of the film. Ono, the mathematics consultant, is a Guggenheim Fellow, and Bhargava is a winner of the Fields Medal.

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
Despite being a rather typical fish out of water/underdog biography, The Man Who Knew Infinity was altogether charming in it's depiction of a star in the invisible galaxy of mathematics. Jeremy Irons is a welcome cipher in his role as the mentor Hardy and Dev Patel was fine as Ramanujan, though I wish we could occasionally see one or two others join the ranks of go-to actors for Indian roles in British films. *B+*

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
This was a good movie. A lot of it felt repetitive but as a biography it felt different in the first and second act while the third act falters into the trap. Jeremy Irons does really well but I felt the friendship between him and Patel felt forced and rushed in the third act rather than organic from somewhere in the second half of the movie. Dev Patel is fine here and while he tries not to play himself most of the times it spills in the important emotional moments. The movie does a good job explaining a complicated subject easily but it concentrates on one specific formula making Ramanujan's achievements smaller in scope.
5/10.

Good not great. I don't see how 5/10 is not good?

In a world where math was accurately applied, you are right Jack Sparrow, 5/10 is a good rating. It becomes clear why few members of this forum went to the movie being reviewed in this thread.

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
5/10 is essentially a 2.5/5 and I'm sure those are considered good. I have never found a movie 10/10 worthy so for me 9/10 is like the highest mark. I think a bigger scale gives me more freedom to rank the movie instead of saying 2.5/5 I'd rather say 5/10 or maybe even 50/100.

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
I agree, 2.5/5 suddenly doesn't look as bad, but when a film gets 2/5 that's suddenly a bad rating for me as well.
If you don't think TMWKI is worth 3/5 or 6/10, which really I think is just borderline good, I'd only call that just above average, why announce the film "a good movie".
Your review shows that you felt a bit mixed about, but seemed to enjoy it after all. A 5/10 then just sounds a bit harsh.
Anyway, it's not like I always grade stuff right, I get critiqued for unjustly grading films plenty of times.

I am sorry that you don't know math very well, but 5 out of 10 is the middle, thus a middling grade, not a good one.

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
Middle grade is not good since when? Are you guys all born geniuses that a middling grade is not good. 5-7 is all good for me and 7-9 is great/outstanding. How difficult is it to get that?

Re: The Man Who Knew Infinity
This is such a pointless argument (everyone has their own system), and will only succeed in helping people think that The Man Who Knew Infinity has been seen by more people than it actually has.
