The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Minnie Driver, Nate Parker, Danny Glover, and rapper Machine Gun Kelly. The film had its premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2014. It had a theatrical release in the United States on November 14, 2014.

Re: Beyond the Lights This was great! Really entertaining, crowd-pleasing and interesting in its takedown of today's pop music scene. Also Gugu Mbatha-Raw is amazing in this and should be in the awards conversation. She's going to be a huge star. A-

Re: Beyond the Lights This old school/new sound romance movie worked it's charm on me as I fell into the world of Noni and Kaz. Mbatha-Raw is a star and the entire picture orbits around her performance. Fun to see Minnie Driver back too. *A*
