Post Re: We're the Millers
We’re The Millers is a comedy showing how choosing an R rating, as opposed to the PG-13 a concept may have garnered a decade ago, can help a film. A comedic core of the film is the Millers square persona in public, contrasting with the F-bomb laden tirades to each other when backs are turned. Furthermore, part of why We’re The Millers is funny is because of familiarity with family-themed road trip films, if not in an RV. Thus it’s a twist on the sub-genre – and a family of four cast being involved with R rating humor and plots feels fresh for a comedy.

Jason Sudeikis does a fantastic job and deserves much of the credit for the film’s success. He finds a comedic niche in his often rambling, rant-style humor, but also puts just enough of a real human underneath the jokes, to make the character more believable and likable. Jennifer Aniston is her usual charming self. Will Poulter gets the most laughs as Kenny, it will be interesting to see if he can stand out comedically in any roles except the awkward square. Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn are fine enough in supporting roles if standard. Like Sudeikis’ David it helps that they don’t cross the line to caricature road trip wack-jobs. When David and Offerman’s Don do each other a favor in the film’s last act, it feels legitimate. Emma Roberts doesn’t make much of an impact as Casey, compared to Sudeikis, Aniston and Poulter.

The film is well paced, with the weed in the RV creating some tension. While there’s no doubts the Millers will get home safe, how much trouble they have to get out, creates some unpredictability.

We’re the Millers isn’t a classic comedy, but it’s an above average one with enough jokes that work, an entertaining plot and talented actors. The sequel and television showings will be welcomed.

Good example of a film where being R instead of the PG-13 it would've been a decade ago, makes it so much better. The Millers looking square in public and then going on foul mouthed tirades when out of earshot, is the key joke of the film.

It works because of the actors. I always considered Sudeikis an afterthought comedian but he's fantastic in this, both funny and managing to squeeze in some leading man gravitas underneath it. He has some Jeff Winger in him here. Aniston is charming and her proving she's a stripper scene is probably the hottest she's ever been on film/TV. Will Poulter as Kenny is responsible for the most laughs and has potential if he doesn't get typecast. Emma Roberts' character is useless, but whatever. I also liked how there's just enough of a real person behind the jokes. Kenny and Nick Offerman's character Don could've descended into caricatures but manage to be somewhat believable, to the point where scenes like David giving Kenny a heart to heart or David and Don doing each other a solid at the end, works on a level going beyond just the jokes

It's not a classic or anything, but is a nice, solid B+ comedy

I agree with everything except Aniston was hot as a stripper. But I liked her in that group kissing scene with her 2 kids.

It's a little too long, but overall I really enjoyed this. It was very funny and surprisingly sweet. Kathryn Hahn stole basically every scene she was in, and I loved the dynamic between all the actors. Jennifer Aniston was incredibly likable and charming here too. The final gag reel moment involving her was hilarious. B+

A breezy, consistently funny comedy with good performances from the whole cast. Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis work well together. B

WE'RE THE MILLERS

I found this to be a funny comedy but it was uneven. There is certainly a couple absolutely hilarious moments in the film but being in this semi-real world a few preposterous moments had me smirking a bit. As if a DEA vet wouldn't vet out the smell of marijuana or the dogs wouldn't be going gaga over their RV at the border crossing. I did enjoy the actors Sudekis, Aniston and the two who played the kids. The film tried to mix in heartfelt "family" moments and I thought that actually worked well in the film. I liked the setup for what could be a sequel.

The comedy flubs during the credits were mostly meh.

Grade - B

I thought this was rather enjoyable. The weed baby actually had a payoff, that last scene made me laugh so hard.

We're the Millers is a middle-of-the-road comedy: it has its moments, but it doesn't leave a particularly strong or memorable impression. The cast members have some chemistry with one another and there are some hilarious gags (the winner being the kissing lesson) and one-liners ("Fuck off, real Flanders!"), but it feels like some of the potential edges have been dulled in the name of making the film more of a feel-good experience than it probably ought to be given the R-rating and the raunchy territory it explores. I don't regret seeing it, but at the same time, there was certainly a lot of room for it to be better.

Very funny and cute. I'd love a sequel. Aniston is great as usual, and Will Poulter is so perfectly cast. He's a scene-stealer.

Solidly fun comedy. I never found it incredibly uproarious, but it definitely has a handful of big laughs and a lot of charm. The cast play well together. The redheaded girl is a cutie.

We're the Millers

A funny movie indeed. It uses the same template as all other comedies, but it's all fun and light-hearted, and Jason Sudeikis is really funny. I've liked this guy since seeing him in Horrible Bosses. Very funny guy with a good delivery ("Fuck off real-ife Flanders" was hilarious, plus a few other lines, and the salon scene is perfect comedy). Aniston is hot when she's doing her water dance in the garage and the very first time you see her in the film (in the stripclub), so hot. Apart from that he face looks like it was hit with a shovel. The boy is a good little actor, and the girl, I suppose, is fine too. Alternate scenes before the credits were also nice.

I'm guessing by its great box office, the final scene of the Millers meeting the other family, and the fact that Hollywood has no other ideas and is content in milking this cash cow, that we'll be seeing a sequel, We're the Millers Again, in a few years. I'm looking forward to it.

After the great legs, I was expecting a little bit more. I think I found, World's End, This is the End, The Heat, and even Grown ups 2 better comedies, but the chemistry between the leads works very well and it is a very funny film. I agree that PG-13 this film would fail, thanks to the raunchier parts this takes a relatively played out genre film to solid entertainment.

I can't help but wish there was an entire film about the Strip Club starring Aniston. Boner Garage and "The man with hooks" were characters I wanted more of!

Really funny movie. Predictable for sure, but it doesn't matter here. It deserves to be fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
