True Romance
True RomanceQuote: True Romance is a 1993 American romance crime film written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott. The film stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette with an ensemble cast consisting of Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore, Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Corrigan, James Gandolfini and Brad Pitt. Val Kilmer is heard but not seen (except in silhouette) as an inner-voice to one of the main characters. Although he is never directly referred to as such, he is suggested as being Elvis Presley.

Great movie. I'd actually rate this higher than Reservoir Dogs. A

Have to mention the great final shoot-out. I love the ending to it.
But look at this cast. There were so many that even the unbolded ones are very impressive.
Christian Slater .... Clarence Worley
Patricia Arquette .... Alabama Whitman
Dennis Hopper .... Clifford Worley
Val Kilmer .... Elvis, Mentor
Gary Oldman .... Drexl Spivey
Brad Pitt .... Floyd
Christopher Walken .... Vincenzo Coccotti
Bronson Pinchot .... Elliot Blitzer
Samuel L. Jackson .... Big Don
Michael Rapaport .... Dick Ritchie
Saul Rubinek .... Lee Donowitz
Conchata Ferrell .... Mary Louise Ravencroft
James Gandolfini .... Virgil

The scene where Gandolfini and Arquette bloody the hell out of each other for 4 or 5 minutes straight in the hotel room in THE modern fight scene in my opinion. Its the new age component to go with those western stand-offs and good ol' kung fu showdowns. I love it.

I really liked most of the film, there were parts that seemed uneven though. But the cast is great, and the action sequences are very memorable, I'd give it a low A

I gave this an "A".. A Brilliant movie that on the SE of TRUE ROMANCE, they have an Alternate Ending where he ends up dying and she just snaps like night and day and turns on him saying he let her down by dying and he swore he'd never do that and really starts bad mouthing him.. Then she took off in the car and there were conceptual photos shown that indicated she committed suicide, but she ends up pulling the vehicle off to the side of the road, abandoning it and hitchiking and that was the end.. I'm glad they stuck with the theatrical ending..

The romance is a bit cheesy and the violence is a bit too mean-spirited, but the amazing ensemble cast and the ending more than make up for it. Slater + Arquette are good, but when compared to Hopper, Walken, Oldman, Pitt, Kilmer, Sizemore, Jackson, Gandolfini.... unbelievable. It's too bad that most of the big-names were in glorified cameos; I would have loved to see more Kilmer-as-Elvis (or even his face!) and Oldman-as-pimp. The Sicilian scene was brilliant, as expected, but I really, really dug the final shootout as well. Scott's direction is fairly unremarkable here; it's QT's script that really stands out. I wish it had been left in his original order; i.e. non-linear. But oh well, it's a solid film with some brilliant moments.

Feels too much like the superior Badlands. Down to the score - a little too reminiscent, imo.

Re: True Romance
it's been about 15 years since i last watched it, so i sat down yesterday to revisit this movie which i regarded as a real gem in my youth. it was somewhat disturbing to watch this material that is 100% tarantino in the hands of tony scott, who directs this thing as if it were "the last boy scout". i think that most of the time his quick cuts work against the really good performances and make this a lesser movie than it should have been. the standout scene here is obviously the walken/hopper confrontation where scott takes a backseat and just lets the actors do their job.

Watched it about five years back on TV, went out and bought it and watched it again that same day. This film is outstanding, I usually am not much of a Slater fan but he nailed it here. Amazing performances across the board, a real gem.
