Catch .44
A very solid effort from Aaron Harvey, and with a good cast in Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman and Forest Whitaker. I can't believe it didn't have more a push theatrically, because it's a very good movie. The monologues and conversations are Tarantino-esque in their ad-hoc, non-story related way, and the violence is mature and and explicit. Richard Byard's editing is superb, and delivers a great story about a non-existant heist being a set up, and it does it with style. The cinematography and shot selection is competent and it's clear that you're not watching "yet another thriller". There's something special about this one.
Whitaker's performance is probably the best I've ever seen him, and Bruce does a good job too in an odd little way. Malin Akerman is the weakest link here, but she's also very strong (and the best I've seen her too). I loved it, and I like the title very much. There are a few references that just made it sweeter too, like how Akerman's character, Tes, puts on music from Bruce Willis on the car radio because she loves the 80s, and how Bruce's character, Mel, references Brokeback Mountain (quite a jovial line).
For those of you that like violence like Killing Me Softly, but what a little more in the shape of entertainment, check this out, there might be something here for you.
B+
