Re: Hellgate
A largely Thai production with two English-language stars, Hellgate is a mediocre paint-by-numbers horror film which almost saves itself with a third-act change of pace. Cary Elwes plays an Englishman who survives the car crash which claims the lives of his wife and son while vacationing in Southeast Asia. After rousing from a coma, he begins to experience disturbing supernatural visions as his physical health deteriorates. William Hurt co-stars as a mysterious American expatriate he turns to for help. The film's first two acts are as slow as they are routine and halfhearted, relying just on disruptive musical stings for scares, but a more unusual and over-the-top third act which finds the two stars venturing into a haunted jungle is fun and benefits from atmospheric and gorgeous locations in rural Thailand.
