Total Recall (2012)
Total RecallQuote: Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film remake of the 1990 film of the same name, in turn loosely based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original film, the plot for the 2012 film does not include a trip to Mars, and exhibits more political overtones. The film blends Western and Eastern influences together, due to the fact that the dominant two nation states in the story, United Federation of Britain and The Colony, are battling for political power.
It is directed by Len Wiseman, written by Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer, starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho, and Bill Nighy. It was first announced in 2009. It was released in the United States and Canada on August 3, 2012 while it is scheduled to be released in Australia on September 6, 2012.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
To no one's surprise, it's a hopelessly generic, derivative, and wholly unnecessary remake. The only changes it makes from Verhoeven's original are superficial ones, following the basic narrative structure and plot twists down to a tee, making for an utterly boring viewing experience. The action scenes are bland and uninvolving, and the whole thing is without a hint of irony or humour. Farrell is curiously wooden, the chicks are interchangeable, and Nighy and Cranston are wasted. A few brief moments of inspiration aside, this is a total waste.

Is Ethan Hawke still in it in any capacity?

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Even though it (obviously) lifts first and foremost from Verhoeven's Total Recall, there are several points in this movie where it could just as easily be a mediocre sci-fi version of The Bourne Identity. There are few beat-for-beat similarities during the first half.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Also, J. J. Abrams should sue Len Wiseman. Only one director can abuse the shit out of lens flares in this town.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Obviously a pointless remake that doesn't hold a candle to the classic original, but it's a fun couple of hours with some cool visuals and Kate Beckinsale looking super, super hot.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
It really was a real pleasure to see a proper hard sci-fi movie tonight!
I just wish they had spent all this effort (it really does look great!) on an original story.
Why bother remaking a perfectly good movie?
Kick another million into the budget and hire a decent writer to come up with something new.
4 out of 5.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
I agree with Bradley.
The vision of the future in this film is great. It may be absurd, but I love the idea of "the Fall" on a pulp sci-fi adventure level. And I love how crowded (with people, with motion) every frame is.
But the script is just...ugh. It's this rote retelling of Total Recall stripped of humor and zest.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
I'm not sure if this is true, but I read John Cho's character is in the crowd at the end. I didn't see him, but if he is, I s'pose this indicates the film is a Next/Repo Men type deal where every scene after a certain point is indeed a dream.
I perhaps underestimated the film then; I thought it almost forgot its central "Is it real? Is it Rekall?" tension amidst the chasing and shooting and general insanity. At the same time, though, this doesn't change the film's general mediocrity.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
It's real. That's one of the really annoying things about it -- there's no possibility with the way Rekall is presented that it's a dream, whereas it certainly is a dream in the '90 film.
And the special effects never, ever look real in this thing.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Total Recall forgets this first rule of action cinema: never be boring.
What the movie amounts to is that of a stereotypical dumb blonde. She's real attractive (great CGI), but she has little to no smarts, at least to the point of keeping you invested (the movie has some decent ideas but doesn't know what the hell to do with them).
It's a missed opportunity to say the least.

TOTAL RECALL
Not even worth re-doing with all the nasty flare effects and boring plot. Should have just kept the Mars storyline. I did like some of the winks at the original and I enjoyed the robot force but overall this didn't do much for me.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Wanted to like this even on a superficial level as it does look phenomenal and has a great setting for the future, plus Kate Beckinsale who is just smokinggggggg.
But, it's basically action piece after action piece and it gets tiring when there is little plot to back it up.
A wholly missed opportunity. Nice ideas are not developed at all despite being omnipresent.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Bill Nighy seemed incredibly uncomfortable during his three or four minutes of screen time.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
I didn't really pay attention for much of it. It's disoriented and feigns sincerity. Still, its relatively rare in contrast to what I think of as an often constipated and defensive HW action story tone and any contempt is internalized. It may have been designed to allow for hate as much as any other, but I liked what I'd call its sense of anti-irony. I think of it as slightly annoying but not generic since it's...so light. Passable.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
You don't need to, lol.
If you want to draw the lines to separate it from perception, you can start. It's just my impression. I think explaining that would either spoil it or be redundant. There wasn't anything about the movie's content that particularly interested me.
Maybe it's my best review. Well, that would require actual reviews.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
Wiseman is better than this. The first Total Recall really wasn't that great but this version is just really bad. The entire action and story are laughable and Farrell doesn't try.
The only thing going for it is Beckinsale's hotness.

Re: Total Recall (2012)
I'm shocked at how Beckinsale makes Biel look like shit when those two were together.
Beckinsale is the most gorgeous actress in all hollywood, I'm sorry Marion but Kate is something else.
Oh, yhe movie was average C
