Bowfinger
BowfingerQuote: Bowfinger is a 1999 comedy cult film directed by Frank Oz. Bowfinger depicts a down-and-out filmmaker in Hollywood attempting to make a film on a small budget with a star who does not know that he is in the film. It was written by Steve Martin, and stars Martin along with Eddie Murphy, and Heather Graham.
Film critics have described Bowfinger as a parody of Hollywood, filmmaking, celebrity and according to many reviews, the group "MindHead" is a parody of the Church of Scientology. Martin has denied this. Ew. I did *not* like this movie. D+

Bowfinger was directed by Yoda himself (Frank Oz), who has directed his share of funny movies. Murphy is hysterical in his duel role of Kit and Jif. I crack up everytime Kit is onscreen, with his over the top antics, where he thinks everybody is being prejudice toward him. Counting 1536 K's in a movie script, and determining it was racists because it was perfectly divisible by 3 (KKK) was just too funny. Steve Martin is also very good here.

Both Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy are good in this movie.
And Heather Graham has a nice meaty role.

Frank Oz is my favorite comedy director which is why I was so disappointed with The Stepford Wives remake, but this is a great movie. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy are at their best and Heather Graham has a great part in this. Lots of Hollywood insider jokes make this even funnier (even though I'm not a Hollywood insider). I love this movie. My grade: A!

I actually really love Bowfinger. I never felt it got its due.
Eddie Murphy was fantastic here, and the screenplay was simply wonderful.

Yay! Glad to see you're a fan of it too. I agree, it never seemed to get it's due, even though it did decent at the box office, if I recall. The number 70 million is coming to mind. It still doesn't seem like it gets the credit it deserves, and it was a great screenplay.

A hilarious movie, espeically since Murphy has not any funny adult comedy since this. Just a great funny movie and I love it.

I liked this too.
While Bowfinger marked the start of a new era of Martin films (well, you could argue that Father of the Bride did, in which case Bowfinger asserted it), it's entertaining and creative. Covering Hollywood is one of the hardest things a screenwriter/director can do, and while I'm sure the producers of Bowfinger ignored a lot, it seems to be a well-rounded look. B+

I thought it was an above average comedy, I didn't laugh much but I smiled a lot. Murphy was very good, Martin was slightly annoying but tolerable. I give it credit for willingness to be weird, and for giving us the hard to forget character name Jiffrenson.

This movie actually gets better with repeat viewings. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy make a great comedic pariing in this movie and the screenplay as well as its take on Hollywood and film business is simply excellent. The movie is not laugh-out-funny most of the time, but it is fuill of wit and good performances with some absolutely great lines. The following will stick in my head forever and pop up anytime I observe the awards period:
"White boys always get the Oscar. It's a known fact. Did I ever get a nomination? No! You know why? Cause I hadn't played any of them slave roles, and get my ass whipped. That's how you get the nomination. A black dude who plays a slave that gets his ass whipped gets the nomination, a white guy who plays an idiot gets the Oscar. That's what I need, I need to play a retarded slave, then I'll get the Oscar. "
This bit is classic and tell me it ain't the truth!

I'm trying out my new numerical grading system.
As for Bowfinger, it's an underrated comedy almost-masterpiece.

I saw this again recently and it really is brilliant/criminally underrated.
"Did you know that Tom Cruise didn't know he was in that vampire movie until three months later?"
"So, do you have any experience with films"
"Um, yes, actually I have quite a bit of experience, I'm a frequent renter, at Blockbuster, and I attend the cinemas often, twice, twice a month, usually."

The supporting players, like Heather Grham, were wonderful as well.

Underrated and smart. One of the few films where Eddie Murphy really showcased his talent.

Probably the last truly great Steve Martin movie before he sunk to the depths of soulless family comedy.
The amazing collection of engaging side characters coupled with Martin being allowed to dive around like a demented monkey for the entire running time is what makes it so enjoyable.

Great comedy of the 90s. One of Eddie's last great non family comedies. Solid A

Incredible comedy. The scene with Eddy Murphy as Kit when he claims his agent to be racists is solid gold material. This film takes a great idea and adds great wit. Oh and the "gotcha suckas" as Martin explains it is also gold.

Funny movie, definitely under appreciated. I've liked other Eddie Murphy movies that didn't do too well at the box office, I guess he's over-exposed or something.

Good movie, but feel it's a bit overrated here at KJ.
