Bernie
BernieQuote: Bernie is an American comedic film directed by Richard Linklater, and written by Linklater and Skip Hollandsworth. The film stars Jack Black as Bernie Tiede, Shirley MacLaine as the elderly widow, Marjorie Nugent, and Matthew McConaughey as the local District Attorney. It made its world premiere as the opening night film of the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival. The film's distributor, Millennium Entertainment, released the film on April 27, 2012.
Bernie is based on a 1998 Texas Monthly magazine article by Hollandsworth, "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas," that chronicles the 1996 murder of 81-year-old millionaire Marjorie Nugent in Carthage, Texas by her 39-year-old homosexual companion, Bernhardt "Bernie" Tiede. Nugent was shot in the back four times with a rifle by Tiede, who confessed to the 1996 murder. According to the Amarillo Globe-News, police searched Tiede's home and found videotapes showing Tiede "engaging in homosexual acts" with local married men. Tiede admitted the murder to police in August 1997 and was sentenced to life in prison.

Re: Bernie
Interesting. The movie touches on Bernie's suspected homosexuality (and lampoons the McConaughey character's earnestly stated fear closeted gays sympathetic to Bernie will end up on the jury), but the sex tapes mentioned on Wikipedia (quoted by trixster above) aren't explicitly referenced.

Re: Bernie
Perhaps the most feather-light film possible chronicling the true event of a murder, Bernie uses the mockumentary technique to satisfying results and is blessed by a fantastic lead performance from Jack Black. B

Re: Bernie
Ever experimenting with the spoken word, director Richard Linklater makes what may be his most "Texan" movie to date. Actual townspeople speak openly about their admiration and disgust with the central characters. Jack Black gives his best performance since School of Rock, his last Linklater collaboration. The authenticity of the region and the characters is enhanced by this experimental style, even if the effect of endless interviews can be occasionally distancing.

Re: Bernie
A near-perfect synthesis of docudrama and mockumentary, intertwining reality and fiction almost seamlessly. Black, as mentioned, is fantastic, and McConaughey continues his unbelievable year. It's a bit too long, and thus its concept starts to grow thin by the end, but, for the most part, this is strong, hilarious moviemaking.

I really liked this. From Black's performance (which felt like it was only one or two ticks down from Zach Galifianakis in The Campaign) and Shirley MacLaine's hilarious food-chewing stare.

Re: Bernie
What an interesting little film and the fact that it actually happened makes it more bizzarre. The documentary feel of it all works well and this is definitely one of Jack Black's better performances.

BERNIE
Watched on Netflix and enjoyed it very much. It was quite comedic and Jack Black gave a wonderful performance. He really fit into this role. It's one I can't see another person doing as well as him. McConaghey and McClaine were good too. The mockumentary feel was well done. I almost thought he was gonna be found not guilty or guilty but with a light sentence of some sort.

Re: Bernie
I wasn't a fan of this. Black is solid but not much more. I thought it started off well but once he shot her the movie lost me. I expected MacLaine to do something much more horrible to him than what she did. McConaughey was the highlight for sure.

This is a good little "based on a true story" film, but nothing more. I wasn't aware of the story before, and I enjoyed watching it. Jack Black gives a memorable performance. It is a film that provides you with everything that happened, in the order they happened, with no other narrative or moral or intention. It shows that good can outweigh evil in terms of a man's legacy, and that people don't really care about what you do if you also do good, and that's as deep as it gets. Good film, though, and I'll always enjoy Matthew McConaughey saying "No further questions, you honour".
