Detachment

I could have done without the Edgar Allan Poe connection right at the end - and James Caan is totally miscast - but this is an excellent film. It is a gripping, unconventional piece about how a substitute teacher deals with what life throws at him, both in and out of the classroom. Containing an array of moral situations, and highlighting many educational problems, Detachment is one of the hardest-hitting school dramas I have seen. The cast is rich in talent but sparingly and economically used. Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, Marcia Gay Harden, James Caan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, and Adrien Brody all do their part to embody a real faculty and the issues within. Brody is fantastic. Kaye's claustrophobic filming style (fast cuts, close-up shots, use of b/w etc.) turns the intensity up to eleven, allowing the film to make greater impact at the pivotal moments. Most of the philosophical content lands nicely, too. Great, great film.
