Quote:
The Secret World of Arrietty, known in Japan as The Borrower Arrietty (借りぐらしのアリエッティ Kari-gurashi no Arietti) and in the UK and Australia as Arrietty, is a 2010 Japanese animated fantasy film based on Mary Norton's juvenile fantasy novel The Borrowers. The film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, was written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, and stars the voices of Mirai Shida as the titular character, Ryunosuke Kamiki as Sho, and Tatsuya Fujiwara as Spiller. The film tells the story of Arrietty, a young Borrower who lives under the floorboards of a typical household. She eventually befriends Sho, a human boy with a heart condition since birth who is living with his great aunt Sadako. When Sadako's maid Haru becomes suspicious of the floorboard's disturbance, Arrietty and her family must escape detection, even if it means leaving their beloved home.

Ghibli announced the film in late 2009 with Yonebayashi making his directorial debut as the youngest director of a Ghibli film. Miyazaki supervised the production as a developing planner. The voice actors were approached in April 2010, and Cécile Corbel wrote the film's score as well as its theme song.

Released in Japan on July 17, 2010, The Secret World of Arrietty received very positive reviews, all of which praised the animation and music. It also became the highest grossing Japanese film at the Japanese box office for the year 2010, and is currently grossing over US$126 million worldwide. The film also won the Animation of the Year award at the 34th Japan Academy Prize award ceremony. Two English language versions of the film were produced, a British dub produced by Studio Canal which was released in the United Kingdom on July 29, 2011, and an American dub released by Walt Disney Pictures in North America on February 17, 2012.

While I didn't like some of the plot points, I still ended up liking it quite a bit.

It was great seeing this on the big screen. The score was more beautiful (even if the credits scene wasn't the original score), and the attention to detail more noticeable. I'll definitely re-watch it many times if just to pick out the common household items in Arrietty's home, inside the walls, etc. All the voiceovers were good as well.

Last fall I would have given it a 8.0, but I'm bumping it up to a 9.0.

No surprise that The Secret World Of Arrietty is stunningly beautiful traditional animation, nor that it's low key story isn't afraid to not wrap up loose ends.

However, I am saddened that all this skill is poured into a European story that has already been well told. I wish Studio Ghibli had bestowed their bounteous talent on an original Japanese story.

5 out of 5.

I hadn't realized until just now that they had two separate voice casts for the international versions - - for example, the UK dub featured Saoirse Ronan as Arriety, whereas the US one had some Disney TV chick.

All animated films are dubbed, even in their original language.

One might certainly make a case that you get the director's original intent from the initial Japanese dub - - though, these two English dubs are fully authorized by Studio Ghibli.

For the true purist, the El Capitan theatre in LA will be showing Arrietty in Japanese without the "distracting" subtitles over the next couple of weeks.

With live-action foreign movies, I would always choose subtitles, even though they are another form of translation distancing - - with animation, the choice is much less clear.

Agreed. Subtitles are NOT an absolute ideal. No director says, "God, I can't wait for my careful shot compositions to be compromised by lots of words and punctuation at the bottom of the screen!" But dubbing of live action is just so hideous. I can't stomach it. It's...alien, and you can't buy into the verisimilitude of the picture at all when the mouths are moving Japanese or French, but the words sound Santa Monica recording studio.

With animation, however, I honestly prefer English dubs as long as they're smartly and cleanly done. And Disney's star-studded dubs for Studio Ghibli imports almost always are. I particularly loved the cast they assembled for Howl's Moving Castle.

Yeah Howl's Moving Castle has the best English voice-over cast out of any of the Ghibli films.

My personal favorite English dub is Kiki's Delivery Service with the hilarious Phil Hartman as Jiji the cat (and Kirsten Dunst was also great as Kiki).
