Y tu mamá también
Y tu mamá tambiénQuote: Y tu mamá también (Spanish: "And your mum too") is a 2001 Mexican drama film directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and co-written by Cuarón and his brother Carlos. The film is a coming-of-age story about two teenage boys taking a road trip with a woman in her late twenties; it stars Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal and Spanish actress Maribel Verdú in the leading roles. The film, a road movie, is set in 1999, against the backdrop of the political and economic realities of present-day Mexico, specifically at the end of the uninterrupted 71-year line of Mexican presidents from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, and the rise of the opposition headed by Vicente Fox.
The film is known for its controversial, unabashed depiction of sexuality, which caused complications in the film's rating certificate in various countries. The film was released in English-speaking markets under its original Spanish title, rather than the literal translation to English, and opened in a limited release in the United States in 2002. In Mexico, the film took in $2.2 million in its first weekend in June 2001, making it the highest box office opening in Mexican cinema history.
In the United States, the film went on to gain nominations for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards, as well as a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards that year. My favorite spanish-language foreign film. Perhaps the greatest road trip movie ever, "Y tu mamá..." mixes the raunchy with the mature. Several themes about Mexican culture in this one, kids... Oh, and, Gael's great. A+

An "OK" film... The two boys weren't very likable. The voice-overs were kind of annoying. I did like Maribel Verdu though, she was solid. I really didn't feel the film was anything special.

Overrated, but it's still a pretty good movie.

Had some great moments and style, but the tangents that were supposed to be steeped in personal history didn't work for me, and felt a bit too Juenet-ish.

Great movie. Loved the narration...one of the best I have seen...or...heard.
The cultural/political references were brilliant, and...probably spot on.
The more you think back on it, at least for me, the more it grows on you, the more you see how great it really is.
And Maribel Verdu's performance is top notch.

I rented this from Netflix and popped it in. Didn't really go out of my way to see it (well, I did rent it )... but, jeez, what a great movie. Cuaron has some style! Sexy, funny, and sooo true at the same time. Definately NOT your typical road trip.
Great performances all around, fantastic music choices, and wonderful cinematography, too.
Classic.

Excellent film. All three of the leads (especially Verdu) are great.
- B+/A- (I think I'm leaning towards an A- though)

Re: Y tu mamá también
A very nice film
If this was in English it would have been a very vile ugly film, but the mexican backdrop made the film cool and special.
Reminds me whenever I am back in Rural India of the coolness and calmness, minus the sex of course...

Re: Y tu mamá también
The cinematography of this film is fantastic and it holds itself together well through the end. The ending scene in the restaurant wasn't what I was expecting from the film but when I look back on it with this ending, the entire production is that much better.

Y Tu Mamá También
It's not a bad movie, but not great either. For a Mexican movie, it's good.

pretty good, i didn't think the narration worked particularly well, but it had some on point things to say so perhaps it could have been done differently rather than axed altogether. otherwise pretty excellent.
