Quote:
The Marriage of Maria Braun (German: Die Ehe der Maria Braun) is a 1979 West German film directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The film stars Hanna Schygulla as Maria, whose marriage with the soldier Hermann remained unfulfilled due to World War II and his post-war imprisonment. Maria adapts to the realities of post-war Germany and becomes the wealthy mistress of an industrialist, all the while staying true to her love to Hermann. The film was one of the more successful works of Fassbinder and shaped the image of the New German Cinema in foreign countries. The film is the first in Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy, followed by Veronika Voss and Lola.

Definitely my favourite Fassbinder to date. Epic, tragic, sexy, and deeply ironic. Partly a mockery of classical Hollywood cinema and partly Fassbinder's style coming into form, it's a brilliant look at post-war Germany from the cynical viewpoint of the 1970s. That ending (like all of Fassbinder) is terribly dark and yet rather hilarious. Plus I'm in love with Hanna Schygulla (but only at this age - not what she's become).

One of those cinematic masterpieces that never gets discussed or even mentioned.
