 Angst essen Seele auf [Ali: Fear Eats the Soul] Ali: Fear Eats the Soul Quote: Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (German: Angst essen Seele auf) (also known in English as Fear Eats the Soul) is a 1974 West German film written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and starring Brigitte Mira and El Hedi ben Salem. The film won two awards at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and is considered to be one of Fassbinder's most powerful works. Brigitte Mira received the German Film Award for her performance.

Re: Angst essen Seele auf [Ali: Fear Eats the Soul] A little too stilted and obvious in its thematics and approach (it's surely not as subtle or fluid as Sirk's films), it's nonetheless a supremely effective work of modern melodrama. Salem isn't much of an actor (which helps his character, actually), but Mira is heartbreaking and the soul of the film. Plus you've got all that great stuff that comes with Fassbinder - explicit sexuality, lurid colour schemes, and biting irony.
It's not as good as All That Heaven Allows or Far From Heaven, but it probably has the biggest heart of the three.
