Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)
Don't Be Afraid of the DarkQuote: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a 2011 American horror film written by Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro and directed by comic book artist Troy Nixey. The film stars Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison, and Katie Holmes, as a man, his daughter, and his girlfriend moving into an 19th century Rhode Island mansion, where his withdrawn daughter begins to witness malevolent goblin-like creatures that emerge from a sealed fireplace in the basement of the house. It is a remake of the 1973 ABC made-for-television horror film of the same name that starred Kim Darby.

I thought the only really creepy part in the film was the bed scene shown in the trailer (which, even after a year of seeing that trailer, is still effective). It's not a bad film at all, but it was pretty disappointing to me.

AICN review of this was the same way.. How the hell did something like this that seemed like a sure thing backfire considering the director involved????

My favorite scenes in the movie were all not (intended to be) scary scenes - the art and architecture stole the show. That's not a good thing for a horror movie. I kind of hated this movie, and I really didn't want to.

Re: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)
I "liked" it but had high expectations so I walked away pretty disappointed. It wasn't scary at all. The best thing about the film is the appealing sets. I thought Bailee Madison and Katie Holmes were pretty good. There's not much to the film though. It's a completely by-the-numbers horror flick. That would be fine if it actually had some scares to offer, but they are nowhere to be found.
A good flick that could have been so much better.

This movie wasn't meant to be terrifying, at least not for adult horror fans. It was clearly made in the spirit of The Witches or Gremlins.

It wasn't made as an R, though.

Re: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)
Well, obviously they didn't try that hard for this to be another Gremlins if they didn't try to re-edit it for a PG-13 rating. I am sure not much would have been needed.
That's the film major problem BTW...that it is somewhere between family horror (but not quite) and adult horror (but not quite).
