L'illusionniste [The Illusionist]
The IllusionistQuote: The Illusionist (French: L'Illusionniste) is a 2010 animated film directed by Sylvain Chomet. The film is based on an unproduced script written by French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956. Controversy surrounds Tati's motivation for the script, which was written as a personal letter to his estranged eldest daughter, Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel in collaboration with his long-term writing partner Henri Marquet, between writing for the films Mon Oncle and Playtime.
The main character is an animated version of Tati animated by Laurent Kircher. The plot revolves around a struggling illusionist who visits an isolated community and meets a young lady who is convinced that he is a real magician. Originally intended by Tati to be set in Czechoslovakia, Chomet relocated the movie to Scotland in the late 1950s. According to the director, "It's not a romance, it's more the relationship between a dad and a daughter." Sony’s US press-kit declares that the "script for THE ILLUSIONIST was originally written by French comedy genius and cinema legend Jacques Tati as a love letter from a father to his daughter, but never produced".

Re: L'illusionniste [The Illusionist]
For want of a better word, The Illusionist is exquisite. At least in visual style and sound design, it has a melancholy beauty that is hard to describe. It is infused with a bittersweet sense of humor, that sets the tempo. And the story? It starts out gangbusters, I wanted to see more... but by the halfway mark the script had devolved into a nothing more than an armature for the puppet show. It's dullsville, man! But dig that hepcat stylin'!!! The style that informed the first half, smothers the second.
It's a must see as a beatific epiphany of the visual arts. It's a must hear as a auralgasm of sound. But the unrepentingly abandoned story arc (yeah, it's still their in outline, but seemingly of the least concern to the director) in favor of the outpouring of stylicious visualosites and multidimensional echoes, is a sorry reminder of the glory that was never sought.
4 out of 5.
[Note: Brief after credits scene for the fans.]

Sounds like the same issues I had with The Triplets of Belleville.

And what about Jacques Tati? Any feelings on how the film holds up to his previous written works?
