[My original review from October 2004:}

Vera Drake: Harrowing Tale of Unrequited Heroism!

Not your typical feel-good movie, but rather a searing look at the personal cost of providing help to non-wealthy (the wealthy are shown taking care of their own without the pesky need of legal harassment) woman in need of abortions in 1950 Britain. The period design - from the set design, to the costumes - right down to the very look and authenticity of the actors is impeccable. Even though I am not a woman and I live in 2004, I vicariously experienced Vera's dilemma within the context of her culture. True heroism seen through the simple helping of others despite social censure. Same as it ever was.

5 out of 5.

Mike Leigh is a fine director and gets the best out of his cast. Unfortunately, Imelda Staunton's great performance is the only thing that really stands out about this film. It's gloomy, dour and just simply plain, never striking the emotional cords a film like this should. As I said, Staunton shines in each of her moments (though it was still not the best female performance of 2004), but she can barely lift the film above average.
