Quote:
Red Riding is a television adaptation of English author David Peace's Red Riding Quartet. Published between 1999 and 2002, the quartet comprises the novels Nineteen Seventy-Four (1999), Nineteen Seventy-Seven (2000), Nineteen Eighty (2001) and Nineteen Eighty-Three (2002). Set against a backdrop of serial murders, including the Yorkshire Ripper case, they deal with multi-layered corruption and feature several recurring characters across the four books. Though real crimes are featured the scripts are fictionalised and dramatised versions of events rather than contemporary factual accounts.

The adaptation into three feature-length television episodes aired on Channel 4 beginning on 5 March 2009. They are produced by Revolution Films. The three films were released theatrically in the US in February 2010.

These are television movies - - they should be in the TV forum.

Post Re: Red Riding Trilogy
This review refers to the entire trilogy.

Absorbing. Brutal. Complex. This three-film crime saga (produced for British television, but released in theatres in the United States) is an enormous and unforgettable achievement. Set in Northern England in the '70s and '80s, the plot centers on abducted and murdered children, intense corruption within the Yorkshire police force, and various flawed, but noble men who find themselves in the center of the storm, including, in the first film, an ambitious, youthful crime reporter (Andrew Garfield). Garfield delivers a dynamic performance. In fact, there is not a bad performance to be found, which isn't surprising as the ensemble cast is overflowing with top-notch British acting talent, including Sean Bean, Paddy Considine, Rebecca Hall, David Morrissey, and Peter Mullan. And the subject matter and details--forced confessions, police brutality, sinister family secrets--are über-compelling.

The story stumbles a bit at the end--the last fifteen minutes of the final film, while powerful, feel rushed--and there are, to my eyes, a few plot holes within the super-dense tapestry of characters, incidents, and motives, but, still, this bold, thoughtful, and well-acted piece of crime fiction demands to be seen. Highly recommended.

A-

Where is it specified this section is only for theatrical films? I see just "movies" in the description.

Besides, these were released in theatres outside of the UK. It's an understandable leap. Let it go, Bradley. Such nonsense is beneath the Most Interesting Forum Member Alive.

The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and The Girl who Played with Fire are also TV movies if you see it this way...

Watched the first film, which was solid. Garfield was great.

The first one is solid, the second one is pretty boring. Didn't see the third.

I remember thinking the second was the best of the bunch.

I thought the second was great. Paddy Considine is an underrated, captivating actor.

The third is where it loses the plot a bit, though not to any grave degree.

I lucked out on the third. I'd heard people saying it was a step down, so I went in with lowered expectations; I think that allowed me to appreciate it for what it was. It was nice to see David Morrissey and Peter Mullan get the spotlight.

It's been quite a while since I've seen them, but I remember some fairly large plot holes. The shoot-out at the end of 1974 didn't seem to fit the big cover-up revealed in 1980, for instance.
