Quote:
A Very Long Engagement (French: Un long dimanche de fiançailles) is a 2004 French romantic war film, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou. It is a fictional tale about a young woman's desperate search for her fiancé who might have been killed on the battle of the Somme, during World War I. It was based on a novel of the same name, written by Sebastien Japrisot, first published in 1991.

From a visual standpoint, the movie is oustanding, but the movie didn't score with me in terms of the storyline. A good effort, and there are times when the movie does work, but the end result is rather underwhelming and disappointing.

Like above said, pretty nice visuals but I couldn't connect with the story. C

Hmmm. I liked it better than anything else Juenet has done. I gave it a B a long time ago, but its actually gone up a little bit in my estimations since then.

The best foreign language film I've seen this decade.

It's one of my all-time favorite French films and it's enormously superior to Amelie which it shares the lead actress and the director with (as well as his usual stylistic approach). The style here is every bit as overwhelming, unusual and sometimes breathtaking as in Amelie. The cinematography is top notch, great editing, sound, art direction... Jeunet really knows how to make a movie captivate on a visual level. Unlike Amelie, however, in the case of this film, it also knows how to tell a fittingly good story with it. This is one of those rare films that just left me with a very satisfied and warm smile at the end of it. It is an interesting story, told very unusually and it never gets boring. There are some points where I thought that the style was too much for its own good and I'd have liked some characters more developed, but it is still a very well-rounded film that deserves every bit of acclaim that Amelie got.

For lack of a better term, I think it's rapturous.

I agree that Engagement is visually stunning, but i found it lacking in other areas, like an engaging story. I just didn't buy it, and it lacked the magical whimsy of the fantastic and overwhelmingly superior Amelie. But it gets a B on visual flair and technical excellence alone.

Seen it again a week ago, still a great flick, holds up on the second viewing.
