THE LAST STATION - 7/10 ( B )
A very good film. Mirren, Plummer, and McAvoy were great. When is McAvoy going to get an Oscar nomination already? He also deserved one for The Last King of Scotland.

Re: The Last Station
It starts off pleasant enough - it opens rather humourously and light-heartedly for an ostensibly dour period piece - but soon turns silly, nasty, and downright depressing. Cheap melodrama mixed with Greek tragedy to give some indication of importance, and it doesn't work at all. I ended up just waiting for the film to end.
There also seemed little overall point to it, other than to have Mirren and Plummer in a showy act-off, with Giamatti and McAvoy chirping in from the sidelines. Nearly everyone in the film ACTS instead of acts; it's a picture purely designed to gather Oscar nominations. The fact that it did, in fact, receive two is very telling.
At least there were some nice boobies.

Hmm, Plummer and Mirren are both terrific, though.

I wouldn't say so.

Re: The Last Station
This is theatrical acting, yes, (especially by Mirren), but considering the whole thing is conceived as a Greek tradegy of sorts (just not a cheap one as you mentioned), it fits pretty well.

Re: The Last Station
A splendid film. One of last year's five best. Mirren and Plummer are electrifying. A fascinating, poignant screen couple for the ages. Their individual performances and chemistry would be enough to sustain 50 great films, but The Last Station also boasts fine performances by James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti, sharp dialogue, and gorgeous cinematography. Just a wonderful, reminds-you-why-you-love-movies experience.

Re: The Last Station
It surely did not remind me why I love movies.

I do have a hard time seeing how one can love this SO much though. I do agree that it seemed a little silly at times. I liked it, but it's just nothing to write home about.

Re: The Last Station
It's the perfect blend of the light (comedy, young romance) and the heavy (Tolstoy's internal conflict between the love of his life and his writing/social views). Tender stolen moments, grand gestures. It's neither feel-good or feel-bad, but rather feel-moved and transported.
And the performances are amazing.
