Re: Couples Retreat
What an absolute disappointment. The pacing is incredibly slow and the movie's just not funny at all. I think it suffers from all the plain, normal characters instead of having some fun, unique ones. Even John Michael Higgens and the Korean guy from the Hangover are tame. Faizon Love with the 20 year-old girlfriend is stale. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau have a couple funny lines here and there, but very weak. Jason Bateman's character is sadly kind of annoying. The girls are nothing special. The movie feels like it's over 2 hours.

7.5 Out of 10??? That would make this well above average.. Wanna rethink this grade???

An enjoyable time-waster with an assortment of likable actors and some gorgeous scenery. B-

Re: Couples Retreat
Good review. I felt quite a lot of pain in the movie as well. Only jokes that worked: the kid at the hardware store, the yoga session, & the shark circle (before it was ridiculously dragged on about later in the movie)

I agree in that those jokes did work, but as i say, it seems really forced. Billingsley doesn't know how to set things up, so instead of easing into something like the yoga, he just dived right in and was basically demanding the audience that they laugh at it. I admit I did chuckle, but it could have played out a lot better.

I thought it was ok....
3/5.
Kristen Davis, yet again, plays Charlotte from SATC. But i love her.
I still find Vince Vaughn strangely attractive...eeek.

Re: Couples Retreat
Couples Retreat doesn't use the talent in front of the camera to their fullest potential. Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, and Jason Bateman especially have used their acting chops to be funnier and more involving then they seem to be in this film. Retreat has its moments of comedy in the first hour especially with a very hilarious scene featuring Carlos Ponce though the film dives way too much into dramatic territory in the third act that it loses its original touch. Add into that a ridculous and horribly edited "Guitar Hero" competition, and you get a film that took too much of a right turn at the end. It's still a decent film in the end. *1/2

Yeah....it really should have been better with that cast. I still can't fathom how the hell it managed such a big gross domestically. It is an okay-ish comedy. For all the jokes that fall flat and all the dull moments, there are actually some funny parts (I liked the yoga session) and the cast works together rather well, even if that doesn't amount to a lot of funny scenes. You can still feel that the ensemble kind of fits. Too bad a better script hasn't been written for them. Oh and the scenery is beautiful.

It managed such a big gross domestically cause the moviegoers who pumped $$$ into seeing this over and over aren't internet cinephiles and were probably begging for a summer comedy and this was it.. Some folks are simply easily pleased..
