A grueling sit. Dreadful from the first shot to the last. Not a moment of enjoyment--ironic or otherwise--in its endless runtime.

I didn't go in with any expectations and thus the film couldn't really disappoint me. But fact is, it's just not very good. It starts with the cast, a lot of them try their best, but they are simply not good. In particular when I compared it to the much superior original (which I have seen afterwards). It is technically rather well-made. The singing/dancing sequences are made with flashy exuberance and it fits the remake (though I dug the original film's more down-to-earth style too). The music is solid (though of course a lot comes from the original too).

The problem is that the movie is way too disjointed due to so many storylines going on and by the end I just didn't give a damn what would become of whom. The movie's characters simply weren't interesting or engaging enough for me to care about their fates. So I didn't and thus my enjoyment of this film severely suffered. It is pretty on the surface, but there's absolutely nothing underneath.
