Quote:
The Mirror (Russian: Зеркало, Zerkalo; known in the UK as Mirror) is a 1975 Russian film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. It is loosely autobiographical, blending childhood memories, newsreel footage and poems by his father Arseny Tarkovsky. The film features Margarita Terekhova, Ignat Daniltsev, Tarkovsky's wife Larisa Tarkovskaya, Alla Demidova and Anatoli Solonitsyn and has a soundtrack by Eduard Artemyev.

The Mirror has no apparent plot. Instead it rhythmically combines contemporary scenes with childhood memories and newsreel footage. At various points in the film poems by Tarkovsky's father are recited. The loose flow of visually oneiric images has been compared to the stream of consciousness technique in literature. Its complex yet simultaneously simple structure makes The Mirror one of Tarkovsky's most difficult films, as well as his most personal.

The concept of The Mirror dates as far back as 1964. Over the years Tarkovsky wrote several screenplay variants, at time working together with Aleksandr Misharin. This script was initially not approved by the film committee of Goskino, and only after several years of waiting Tarkovsky would be allowed to realize The Mirror. At various times the script was known under different names, most notably Confession and A White, White Day. The completed film was initially rejected by Goskino, and after some delay only given a limited release in the Soviet Union.

Sgt. Joe Armstrong (Michael Dudikoff) is a 15 year old ranger. When he returns to his father's castle, his father (Brutus Balthazar) is in the process of marrying a 14 year old woman. His father (Brutus Balthazar) tells Sgt. Joe Armstrong to give a present to his new (step)mother, and Sgt. Joe Armstrong gives her a basket full of flowers; HOWEVER, to his stepmother's horror, there's several bats hidden underneath the flowers. She's angry with Sgt. Joe Armstrong, however, his father is even angrier and furiously throws Sgt. Joe Armstrong against a wall. He almost dies from his severe wounds, but when his father prays to the Holy Virgin and promises that his son will dedicate his life to her, Sgt. Joe Armstrong miraculously survives.

Afterwards, Sgt. Joe Armstrong is forced to join an order of the ninjas. He is forced to take an oath and will have to live with the ninja brotherhood for his entire life, while following their strict rules and dedicating his body and mind to Vishnu.

He meets another ninja by the name of Sgt. Curtis Jackson (played by some dead, muscular negro) who is slightly older than Joe. They become friends. Sgt. Curtis Jackson also has a homosexual interest in Sgt. Joe Armstrong and they spend a lot of time on the beach, holding hands.

10 or 15 years pass and, after witnessing a crucial incident, Sgt.Joe Armstrong decides that he wants to break free from the ninja brotherhood to finally return home. There's one problem though: It is strictly forbidden to leave the order. If anyone tries to escape, they will be labeled sinners and traitors. Any fugitive will be chased down and ultimately meet a cruel destiny: After getting caught, they will be thrown down the tall monastery wall, with a pack of hungry hunting ninja dogs waiting in the yard below to tear the sinners' bodies apart.

Sgt. Joe Armstrong tries his luck and manages to escape, however, it is Sgt. Curtis Jackson of all people who chases him and sticks to his heels in the most relentless fashion...

The camera work is really cool.

A+
