Re: Fish Tank (2009)
Sure to be one of the best films of the year, Fish Tank is a mesmerizing and grim drama that features unanimously strong performances and memorable direction. The film really succeeds due to the central performance from newcomer Katie Jarvis. She plays Mia, a down-on-her-luck teen living with her distant mother and sassy younger sister in an English slum. Recently abandoned by her former best friend, she feels as if no one in the world cares about her or what she does. But things start to look up in two different ways - she begins a budding romance with a local boy (Harry Treadway from the Chronicles Of Narnia films) and also finds sexual tension developing between her mother's new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender). It's obvious where the film is going from the beginning, but the screenplay is so sharp and tightly wound that all of it feels incredibly believable and realistic. The naturalistic, documentary-style lensing adds to this and gives the film a raw and intimate feel. Jarvis is an absolute natural and gives the central role so much depth, able to convey the vulnerability and innocence that exists behind Mia's tough exterior. Fassbender is also excellent, refusing to make Connor a typical 'pedophile' monster. As he is one of the only ones to show Mia some kindness, you almost hope that the film won't take the route it eventually does. The final act becomes incredibly dark and intense, and is sure to have your eyes glued to the screen, but ultimately the film ends on a satisfying and rewarding note that offers a glimmer of hope amidst all the bleakness. This is a must-see and I highly recommend checking it out. A

Re: Fish Tank (2009)
This goes down as the most overlooked film of last year in KJ. The film's performances and story range from good to great, but the brilliantly realistc cinematography -which is in its finest form when Mia steals Connor's daughter overshadow both of those. They're different in many ways but it's about on par with last year's coming of age dramas such as Precious and An Education.

Re: Fish Tank
It's much better than Precious or An Education.

Re: Fish Tank
I'm so excited to see this.
I wonder if Katie Jarvis'll ever do another movie.

Re: Fish Tank
This was utterly fantastic. Jarvis and Fassbender are aces throughout and thought it has some predictable moments, the big twist later on is completely shocking and really makes the film stand out from the crowd. Definitely one of the given year's best.
