Air Doll (空気人形 Kūki Ningyō) is a 2009 Japanese drama film directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. It is based on the manga series Kuuki Ningyo by Yoshiie Gōda, which was serialized in the seinen manga magazine Big Comic Original, and is about an inflatable doll that develops a consciousness and falls in love. The movie debuted in the Un Certain Regard section at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. It opened in Japanese cinemas on 26 September 2009.

Director Koreeda has stated that the film is about the loneliness of urban life and the question of what it means to be human.

Post Re: Kûki ningyô (Air Doll)
It's overlong (by the end almost painfully so) and a bit repetitive at times, but overall Air Doll is an interesting and original film featuring gorgeous visuals and strong central lead performance from Bae du-Na. The first few scenes provide a perfect setup, with the introduction of Nozomi's (du-Na) owner and then the eventual transformation sequence where Nozomi 'discovers' her heart. This scene is incredibly memorable and beautifully photographed. Afterwards in handling the journey Nozomi takes on the road to self-discovery, the film features one too many scenes that linger on without any purpose - and many characters that seem to be significant at first often fall by the wayside. The climax is also oddly violent, bizarre and tragic, which doesn't really fit the tone of the rest of the film. But du-Na is pitch perfect here and makes the film worth seeing. It's hard not to sympathize with her character, who could almost be viewed as a parallel to Pinocchio in a sense. du-Na gives the role the perfect amount of wide-eyed innocence and likability, and is nothing but believable in every frame. The film is flawed and I don't see it finding much of an audience, but it's worth checking out at some point based on her performance and the wonderful cinematography. B-
