Among the many biopics and true stories this was a rather overlooked nice little film that came and went back in 2008 - unfairly so. It might not offer much new to see and frankly, the factual accuracy of a lot of the events is disputable, but it is a well made example of the genre that captures the period and its atmosphere very well. Its strongest asset is by far its cast. Adrien Brody is the film's lead, but while good, he seems rather underdeveloped. Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Eammon Walker and Beyonce are the ones who really score with this film. In particular Beyonce's layered and moving performance as Etta James certainly deserved more accolades than it got.
