Son of the Mask
Son of the MaskQuote: Son of the Mask is a 2005 fantasy family-comedy film directed by Lawrence Guterman, starring Jamie Kennedy as Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist from Fringe City who's just had his first child born with the powers of the Mask. It is the sequel to the successful 1994 film The Mask, an adaptation of Dark Horse Comics which starred Jim Carrey. The film had an $84 million budget and $57.6 million worldwide box office gross.
It also stars Alan Cumming as the god of mischief, Loki, whom Odin has ordered to find the Mask. It co-stars Traylor Howard, Kal Penn, Steven Wright, and Bob Hoskins as Odin. Ben Stein makes a quick reappearance as Dr. Arthur Neuman from The Mask to reestablish the relationship with the mask and Loki. The film was widely panned by critics. It won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Remake or Sequel.
Unlike the first film which was more adult oriented, this film is a family film as the film's tone is much lighter and more comical than the first one's darker tone.

Not much is worse than Alone in the Dark. And there were spots that made me laugh in Son of the Mask. Just, it's nothing new. D+ is undoubtedly over-generous, so expect a D.

I can't help but giggle a little that you went to see this and didn't like it. Sometimes, it's painfully obvious that a movie is gonna suck badly, and Son of the Mask has "shitty movie" written all over it. How many good movies did you pass on to see that one instead?

To my surprise, the movie itself isn't awful. I'm not saying it's a good movie, or that I would reccommend seeing it, but it's not an unwatchable. It was also very smart of the filmmakers to use Jamie Kennedy only twice as the Mask, as many comparisons between Carrey and Kennedy were bound to come up. I do think though that I am being very generous when I give this movie a C-.

The fact that 3 people on these boards saw Son of the Mask (on opening day, I might add) shocks me.

They have a good idea, by incorporating a lot of Looney Tunes humor into the show (Kennedy's name in the movie is Tim Avery, a slight change to Tex Avery), but it's still a pretty bad movie. Just not as bad as I thought. I said it before, and I'll say it again: it's like Garfield. Bad idea on paper, bad execution, save for one or two decent things. In this case, Jamie Kennedy isn't half bad, really. But, isn't anything with Alan Cumming destined to be bad?

Other way around. The movie is bad in spite of Alan Cumming.

I don't know about this, the trailers were pretty damn bad, but the TV spots aren't too bad. I'll probably see this in theaters considering I'm on vacation next week.

Man, this wasn't even THAT bad. I'm surprised. I love the original, mostly for Jim Carrey's turn and this could have been a lot of fun as well...if it didn't star Jamie Kennedy and didn't try to be a kiddie flick. I enjoyed all the over-the-top "Mask"-effects and I can't say I was bored during the film. Yes, it's ridiculous, crazy and makes no sense, but that is not too far off the original. Moreover, I liked Bob Hoskins in this, heh. I didn't even realize it was him until the movie was over.
It would still be a stretch to call the film good. Jamie Kennedy is bad in this one and the whole idea of having a baby with Mask-powers is terrible as is the subplot with the dog. The only part of the plot I liked was the one involving Alan Cumming. Other than that, it was rather pathetic. Still, I have seen worse movies that were released last year.
