My Winnipeg
My WinnipegQuote: My Winnipeg (2007) is a feature film directed by Guy Maddin. Starring Ann Savage, the film is a surrealist-inflected pseudo-documentary about Winnipeg, Maddin's home town. Blending legend, history, and a biting critique of the city's treatment of its architectural past with fantasy and more personal matters, the film explores issues of local attachment, culminating in an explanation of why Maddin continues to live in the city of his birth.

Re: My Winnipeg
Here's my original review from the July '08 Foreign & Independent thread... Bradley Witherberry wrote: My Winnipeg: Maddin-gly Brilliant!Very perceptive. Very funny. Very great. As I recently described Werner Herzog's work, Guy Maddin makes the idiosyncratic, universal! Henceforth, I am devoted to waiting for the sequel: Citizen Girl, featuring the character portrayed by Kate Yacula battling her classic archnemesis Mother, as embodied by Ann Savage. (Not to mention my inexplicable urge to buy the entire 50 season DVD boxset of Ledge Man).... This is a fiercely brilliant philosophy-comedy, or as they will come to be known as they become popular - - PHI-COM's. Highly recommended. 51 out of 5. (PS: Here's my KJ review of Maddin's previous film, Brand Upon The Brain, with brief mention of my virgin Maddinightmare *, Saddest Music In The World starring the incomparable Isabella Rossellini...) (( *PPS: I should say dreams... Oh, aren't we all such drama queens when it comes to someone'thing we're passionate about?!?!? A timely reminder to cut the other dude some slack...)) Bradley Witherberry wrote: I can hardly believe there has been a response in this thread - - my other Maddin thread lies untouched, frozen deep under the forum tundra. Anyways, I just found out that Ann Savage was the one and the same actress who played the classic femme fatale in the ultra-cool, b-movie, 1945 film noir Detour. That blows my mind! I picked up a VHS copy of Detour about a decade ago in the 99¢ bin at wallyworld - - if you haven't seen this gem - - search out a copy and watch it ASAP!!! (Here's a link to Roger Ebert's "Great Movies" review of it...)

Re: My Winnipeg
I loved the opening 20 minutes. The train ride, the sleepwalkers, the amazing editing and lighting and cinematography and etc. The more it goes on however, the more it turns into sort of a boring regular style documentary. The whole hockey rink thing did nothing for me. I loved the dancing scene in the middle, but that was the closest it comes to recapturing the magic of the 1st act. Still a worthwhile picture though for Maddin's editing and the look of the whole thing.
3.5/5

Re: My Winnipeg
Holy shit.
Winnipeg totally doesn't deserve to have a film this incredible. Or, for that matter, a filmmaker as amazing as Guy Maddin.

Re: My Winnipeg
I guess I should expand on what I said...
If Man on Wire showed what could be done within the constraints of documentary, then My Winnipeg shows that those constraints are totally un-fucking-necessary. This is equal parts expressionistic silent film, melodramatic re-enactment, and historical documentary, and it absolutely and unquestionably works. It's not so much a film as it is a reflection of Maddin's mind, and a representation of his conflicted memories of his hometown, and, in that sense, it's unparalleled and unmatched in its creativity and imagination. Completely brill all-around.
I could go on and on with all the things I found brilliant and exciting and impressive, but I'd be here all day. Suffice to say, this is the type of film that has so many things working and working well that each moment you watch it, it becomes even more exceptional and fantastic. It's the kind of film that renders all other films you've seen recently utterly obsolete. Only this one matters. It's that powerful.
So yeah, I loved it. Number one of 2008 with a fuckin' bullet.
