Quote:
Pickpocket is a 1959 film by the French director Robert Bresson. It starred, at the time, nonprofessional actor Martin LaSalle in the title role, with Marika Green as the ingenue. It was the first film for which Bresson wrote his own screenplay rather than "adapting it from an existing text."

As in Diary of a Country Priest, some screen time is devoted to the protagonist's writings, and, as in A Man Escaped, the protagonist's voice is heard more in the voiceover than in dialogue.

Already requesting threads for movies you haven't actually seen yet? MADNESS.

What if something happens to you before then? Take care of yourself.

Bresson's methods are to be admired, and I was never bored, but I got a great sense of "so what?" when the film ended. The acting is very measured (some would say emotionless) and the camerawork is deliberate and non showy, but it all seems in service of nothing in particular. However, Bresson is truly the model of an auteur - not only having control over all aspects of the filmmaking, but doing as many takes as possible to get the scene 'just right' - and the film is seriously well-made, so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on it. I just didn't love it.
