Re: The Broken [2008]
3/10 -> D-
A derivation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This time they come out of the mirror to kill and replace you. How or why, I don't really give a damn, but when a movie is uninspired as this and tries to mask itself into deep metaphor and supposedly very meaningful scenes I'd be happy if they provided at least some kind of an explanation just for the kicks. Though I must admit that those glimpses behind the mirror look very stylish. Unfortunately that's under 10 seconds of good stuff.

The Broken is not really worth a watch. There's nothing new or original here to see and even the old token formula is developed not well enough. This Lena Headey-starrer plays like a mixture of Mirrors and The Invasion of Body Snatchers, but dispenses with any kind of an explanation for what happens on-screen, taking the audience's belief into this simply for granted. It's just there. In some films, I don't mind to be left without an explanation, but this one wasn't one of those.
The build-up during the first 30-40 minutes is actually pretty solid. There is atmosphere, tension and a sense of big mystery there. However, we simply never get the pay-off there. The big twist is actually not that much of a twist as it's predictable. Even then, it's still a pretty silly twist. Acting-wise, there's not much to speak about, other than Richard Jenkins' decent turn and repeating the same images of a car crash over the over again seems just gratuitous by the 5th or 6th time. The movie starts out as an intriguing thriller, but then just descends to a rather pointless and boring horror flick of the kind that we have seen before many times and in better versions.
