Re: Deep Rising This film rates indecently high on my shlocky thrill scale. Full of cheesy characters and dialogue but avoiding any sense of a soulless slick edge its always a blast to watch.
They need to make more monster movies like this.

Re: Deep Rising I wouldn't call it an "A" picture, but Gulli's right. Deep Rising is a goofy, funny, deeply enjoyable monster flick.

Re: Deep Rising This is actually probably my favorite horror movie of the 90s thanks to it's great pace, great cast of colorful characters, and some truly awesome creatures. More than anything, watching this makes me wish that Stephen Sommers hadn't had each film afterwards sink in quality. Imagine if every movie the guy made was as much of a blast as this and even The Mummy.

You forgot to add that it was boring, tedious, with laughable performances. It made Ebert's "most hated films" list for a reason, you know.
And I haven't seen Shoot'Em Up yet, but if the trailer is any indication, it will be light years better.

And I haven't seen Shoot'Em Up yet, but if the trailer is any indication, it will be light years better. I'm not going to be able to convince you that you weren't disinterested in the movie, but I think it's silly to call the performances "laughable", primarily because many of them were played for laughs. And I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but I couldn't wait to see Shoot 'em Up. I think that it's the best trailer for a shitty movie this year. --- Just trying to keep your expectations from being too high.

Re: Deep Rising So I decided to watch this last night after the discussion in the Hannibal Rising thread (I'd never seen it before).
I liked it, and while I won't share in the unmitigated ravings of Gulli, I think it knows exactly what it is and does what it does remarkably well. It's a great mix of a survivalist-type disaster flick, like The Poseidon Adventure, and a fun horror-comedy, like Tremors, and it's a blast to watch. Great ending, too.
I think I prefer The Mummy, though.
