The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
The Hunchback of Notre DameQuote: The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 1996 animated feature produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released to theaters on June 21, 1996 by Walt Disney Pictures. The thirty-fourth animated feature in the Disney animated features canon, the film is inspired by Victor Hugo's classic novel Notre Dame de Paris aka The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The plot centers on Quasimodo, the deformed bellringer of Notre Dame and his struggle to gain acceptance into society.
The film was directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, directors of Beauty and the Beast, and produced by Don Hahn, producer of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The songs for the film were composed by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, and the film featured the voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Paul Kandel, Jason Alexander, Charles Kimbrough, David Ogden Stiers, Tony Jay, and Mary Wickes (in her final film role). It belongs to the era known as Disney Renaissance, which refers to the ten-year era between 1989 and 1999 when the Walt Disney Animation Studios returned to making successful animated films, recreating a public and critical interest in the Disney studios. This animated film received a G rating by the Motion Picture Association of America, and was rated U by the British Board of Film Classification in the UK. Despite these ratings, the film is considered to be one of Disney's darkest animated motion pictures similar to films such as The Black Cauldron.

The second best thing to come out of Disney's revival in the 90's (after Beauty & the Beast). Gorgeous animation, music, and some darker themes.

Easily the darkest of the animated films of the '90s, this is also one of the best - and most underrated. It is gorgeous to look at, the music is phenomenal and the story is fascinating, compelling and emotional. Excellent and a real masterpiece of the genre.

Very Underated Disney Pic.
Yes it is darker, but the whole movie is just beautiful. Every character gets developed in a very believalbe way, and the artwork and music are beautiful, and the comic bits come at the appropriate time.
Grade: A.

Probably the last great traditionally animated Disney film.

This is one of my favorite Disney movies, if not my favorite. It's also BEGGING to be on Broadway.

I think Princess and the Frog is seriously overrated. It's not bad or anything, but I haven't had the desire to revisit it since theaters. Same with Tangled.

"I've Got Friends on the Other Side" is a great song though
Tangled feels more like one big pop song and less like a musical, I blame Mandy Moore.

Watching this right now. I just don't understand why this movie isn't more beloved. It is absolutely fantastic. Also very, very excited to see what Disney has in store for it's production of it that is premiering at Papermill Playhouse in October. Hoping it ends up on Broadway!

Re: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Unlike most of the internet, I don't get wet dreams over this movie, but it is kind of underrated. The music is easily one of the best Disney scores, easily on par with Beauty, Aladdin and Pocahontas. God Help the Outcasts is my favorite, but Bells of Notre Dame, Out There and Heaven's Light/Hellfire are also smashing. Topsy Turvy isn't bad either. The gargoyle song definitely tarnishes the soundtrack as a whole. As for the story, it is a bit too dark to be made into a children's movie. Beauty and the Beast managed the whole dark scene followed by comic relief much better than in this film, where every scene with the gargoyles makes me want to put my foot through the TV. Frollo is a good villain, but he is almost too convinced that he is doing the right thing. Sure he believes his God doesn't want him to lust, but surely he wouldn't want him to burn Esmeralda at the stake. Phoebus is kind of bland, but Esmeralda is a strong heroine, even if she never lives up to her potential after her musical number. That leaves Quasimodo; I think he is just too cute and nice, not nearly ugly enough. If someone like him walked down the street, they would probably take pictures with kids, not have tomatoes thrown at him. So while I don't pop this one in when I want to feel good, it certainly deserves better than the Walt Disney company has treated it.

Re: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
The film sadly suffers from goofiness and a weak 2nd act, but the film overall is one of Disney's best.

Quasimoto escapes his tower only to be locked in the friend zone. Tough break buddy, but at least you got your "one day" of thinking it could happen before a handsome blonde guy, who could have literally any girl in Paris, takes the only one who is into you.
Pretty darn good movie though. The music and animation are both terrific.

Re: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Definitely a great movie. If it weren’t for the gargoyles and the constant breaking of tone to play to the kiddies, it could be a masterpiece. The story, soundtrack and animation are all aces.
