Quote:
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 musical film adaptation of the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, directed by Mel Stuart, and starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The film tells the story of Charlie Bucket as he receives a golden ticket and visits Willy Wonka's chocolate factory with four other children from around the world. Filming took place in Munich in 1970, and the film was released on June 30, 1971. It received positive reviews, but it was a box office failure despite the fact that it was able to recoup its' budget. However, it developed into a cult film due to its repeated television airings and home video sales. In 1972, the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

One of my personal favorites. I've been watching this for as long as I can remember. Solid adaptation, good score/songs/etc., and a....happy, if too cliche type ending. I like Tim Burton's adaptation better overall.

Puts Burton's version to shame. (Actually, Burton's version puts Burton's version to shame)

I love this movie. Gene Wilder is great

Burton should not do remakes.

This movie is weird and quirky enough on its own. The riverboat scene is one of the most disturbing scenes for me when I was a kid.

Gene Wilder adds another amazing performance to his resume. A

Burton did not do a remake; it was a new adaptation of the book. But of course, ya'll know how I feel about the whole WWatCF vs. CatCF thing... :D So I won't get into again, LOL.

Rating for this, though?

D+ -- because I've come to like the "Pure Imagination" song (though not the Wilder version; love Maroon 5's), and I somewhat prefer this movie's Veruca to Burton's, even despite the fact that Burton's was more to the book with the squirrels and stuff

I like it better than Burton's version, even though the songs turn me off even more, mainly due to Gene Wilder's insane, incredible performance. Depp's androgynous Willy Wonka can't touch it. The riverboat sequence is hilariously terrifying - easily the best scene from either film. It's got a lot more heart, no silly backstory for Wonka, and much better Oompa Loompas. Still, though, it's not without its faults - a lot of the songs irritate me, and its mostly lacking in distinct style, something that Burton obviously brought to his version. It's a childhood favourite of mine, but it doesn't hold up as well.

I just love how it starts with dozens of kids robbing the store of candy :hahaha: Its insanely absurd but in a great way

Gene Wilder agreed to play Willy Wonka on one condition.

I think the new one is better because it sticks closer to the book apart from the father subplot. And this one is creepy, with Slugworth and the boat ride. And the geese are supposed to be squirrels! I do like some of the songs, and some of the actors are good (like Gene Wilder), but there are elements that feel dated (the candy man would get arrested for manhandling all of those kids, as would Slugworth). I don't hate it, but they probably should have waited to make it till they had better technology available to make it with, because the look does not hold up.

A 45 year old film kind of dated? You don't say.

This still rocks. I wipe my ass with Burton's awful film.
