The Gauntlet is a 1977 American action film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. The film also stars Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney, and Mara Corday. Eastwood plays a down-and-out cop who falls in love with a prostitute (Locke) whom he is assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix in order for her to testify against the mob.

I have a friend who considers The Gauntlet to the pinnacle of bad movie-making. For him, there's shit, and then there's THE GAUNTLET. He refers to it with such reverence.

Hmmm a close interpretation, I mean its an enjoyable movie and Love Eastwood and I love a good shotout but large sections of the movie make no sense. Also Sondra Locke makes no sense when she talks and the final sequence is completely nuts (I mean why the fuck didn't they shot out the tires). Still its good fun in a dumb way.

That's so fucking funny. My friend, while drunk, gave me a brilliant ten minute summary of the film. I should have recorded it. But I just remember the climax of his tour-de-force, when he shouted, at least three times, "Why the fuck can't they just shoot out the goddamn tires!?!?!"

I've been meaning to see it ever since.

See it for some brainless gun action fun and you may enjoy it a bit. But the movie as a whole fails.

The Gauntlet

They certainly don't make them like this anymore. Fair little film. Nice story. Cool Clint and his real-life wife, the sexy Sondra Locke - man, I'd tap that ass! Pat Hingle doing his best Nick Nolte impression, and a fun, cross-country chase plot. The film is so shoddily filmed at times, and the final segment is laughably bad, but the dialogue throughout is good, and for 1977, it's a fine film.

The cover art is possibly the best thing about it, though.

If I recall Vacation used the Gauntlet as a basis for their cover art.

I vaguely remember it, and yes, it does resemble it.

Yes. That's what drew me to the movie.

This has great remake potential. But they'll need to modernise it..."HAUL ASS" isn't going to cut it.
